UPDATE 5/11/2007:
- Guess what comes out today? Helio Ocean
- Helio Ocean hands-on review
- Helio Ocean Review: Come back at 11PM PST
- Helio Ocean Unboxing Video and Initial Impression
First things first: sod the iPhone. Yeah, you read right, forget about it. Stop saving 10-percent of your pay-packet every month, don’t sign 18 to 24 months of your life away to Cingular, think laterally, not with the crowd. Helio have just blown everyone out of the water, and ironically they’ve done it with the Ocean.

Dual-slide for both number pad and full QWERTY. 3G for screaming downloads. Two-megapixel camera with flash, GPS, full HTML browser, 2.4-inch 260k colour QVGA display, on-board stereo speakers, 200MB of internal memory and microSD for more than 2GB more, USB Mass Storage Mode with PC and Mac compatibility… I’m throwing all this out in one fat chunk because if I were to talk you through it we’d be here all day.
And a fat chunk it certainly isn’t: at 4.33 x 2.2 x .86 inches it’s smaller in all dimensions than the Sidekick 3, as well as being lighter at just 5.61oz. It takes all the usual Helio goodies like instant messaging from Windows Live, Yahoo! and AIM, made super-simple thanks to the full keyboard, then adds out-of-the-box support for AOL, Hotmail, Gmail, EarthLink and Yahoo! Mail, Helio’s own email service of course, and Microsoft Exchange for push-email. Extra accounts can be added thanks to custom POP and IMAP profiles.

GPS-reliant features like Buddy Beacon and Google Maps are joined by the new Helio UP service, a way of easily tagging photos with title, description, keywords and geographical location before uploading them to the online Helio Album. Alternatively Helio’s tight MySpace integration means adding pictures to your profile is as straightforward as navigating those of your friends in either the browser, thanks to the Mini Map and page optimisation, or the MySpace on Helio v2 app.

A dedicated chip for handling music playback means you can eke fifteen hours of continuous audio from the media player, and of course there’s support for your own tunes and those bought from Helio Music. If you’re already signed up to an all-you-can-eat PlaysForSure subscription service like Yahoo! or Napster then you’ll be pleased to hear Ocean can play those tracks too. Stereo Bluetooth means you can cut the cord and enjoy your music wirelessly, and downloading fresh material is fast thanks to Ev-do.
So far, so awesome; but all those features aren’t worth a soapy trout if the interface isn’t up to scratch. Thankfully Helio have completely rejigged the UI to suit both portrait and landscape orientations of the new display, and preliminary feedback from our oh-so-fussy sources tell us that it’s every bit as user-friendly as you’d hope. Integration between apps is tighter than the North Korean border, with contact lists tied into each of the IM services for “presence detection” and instant address book search direct from the idle screen.
Traditionally convoluted web-searching is made indecently simple; flick out the keyboard and start typing, direct from the idle screen. Ocean automatically searches Yahoo!, Google, Wikipedia and any other provider you choose, serving results up in a tabbed interface together with local results tied into your GPS location. Meanwhile, the single messaging hub brings together email, SMS, MMS and IM in one dashboard, and Ocean is clever enough to automatically decide on message format depending on recipient and whether pictures or video are attached. Support for multi-tasking means you can still browse the net while listening to music, and with up to 5.1hrs talk-time it doesn’t fall short when it comes to basic phone duties either.

It’s an awesome handset, and you can well believe it when Helio say that not only is Ocean the device the company was born to offer, but that it was in development even before the company was founded. If there’s still a part of you hankering after the iPhone, then maybe the price will convince you otherwise; Ocean will drop this coming Spring with a MRSP of $295. Honestly, I’m considering emigrating to the US just to sign a cellphone contract.
Rest assured that SlashGear will bring you a full hands-on report just as soon as demo models are available.

im not familiar with helio…wonderful job reviewing it here…do you know what phone services it will be used on ..verizon, cingular, etc?
+5Chris Davies March 26, 2007
Helio is an independent MVNO, so you’d be signing a contract with them. They’ll be the only people supplying the Ocean; you can check it out at http://www.helio.com
Let’s just say that if I lived in the US my cellphone contract would be with Helio rather than any Cingular, Verizon or any of the others.

Helio’s backbone network is Sprint.
+2George Collins March 26, 2007
Thanks for the review. This is a pretty intriguing phone. I don’t care for the music and instant messaging features. What I like is the size, dual keyboard and possibility of accommodating an MS Exchange account. I have a few questions:
1. Is this a tri-band or quad-band GSM phone? In other words, will a user be able to use it overseas where GSM basically rules?
2. What OS is it using? I gather from the review that it is proprietary. Is that correct?
3. Does it have wi-fi functionality?
4. Will it sync with an Outlook calendar and Outlook contacts, in addition to email?
I am currently using an i-mate Jamin (aka HTC Prophet) I bought in Europe but wouldn’t mind upgrading to something like the Ocean if it offers the functionality I need. Many thanks.
+12Chrono Cr@cker March 26, 2007
Looks like this one is whipping the iPhone!
+9Vincent Nguyen March 26, 2007
1. Is this a tri-band or quad-band GSM phone? In other words, will a user be able to use it overseas where GSM basically rules?
The Helio Ocean uses Sprint’s network which is CDMA. It’s not a GSM phone, so will not work outside of the United States.
2. What OS is it using? I gather from the review that it is proprietary. Is that correct?
Proprietary inside out.
3. Does it have wi-fi functionality?
With EVDO, there’s no need for WiFi.
4. Will it sync with an Outlook calendar and Outlook contacts, in addition to email?
I’m meeting with Helio today for a close look. I’ll make sure to ask this question along with getting videos and more images.

I’ve just looked through the press material Helio sent us; yes, it will sync with email, calender and contacts from Exchange. It’ll also support push email from providers like Yahoo!
+8Paul March 26, 2007
“It’s not a GSM phone, so will not work outside of the United States.”
So this is of interest for us in New Zealand (or Japan, Australia, the UK, China) why?
What’s the point in putting any of these great features into anything that doesn’t work outside of the US. I take it this will be aimed at the top end/business market whom travel outside of the US, and it won’t work?
Yeah great features yadda yadda, but for most of us driving a Toyota would be the sensible thing yet we covert the Corvette or the Aston Martin – this is the point of the iphone.
-9erick March 26, 2007
looks great!
+6dustin March 26, 2007
this phone isnt meant for top end business professionals, but rather, well, rich us kids that want to be constantly connected to myspace, and have all sorts of sweet doo-hickeys to play with..think a cdma sidekick with a better camera
+3Nadia March 26, 2007
AHAHAHAA not GSM?!?! How could Helio put out a phone like that with all the “bells and whistles” and NOT make it GSM! So stupid! But then again ALL Helio’s phones are NOT GSM
-20so YES! I will keep saving 10 per cent of my paycheck for the Apple phone, ’cause I travel with my phone and that means overseas…
Vincent Nguyen March 26, 2007
Nadia, Helio isn’t going after the GSM market. I agree with Dustin, the Ocean is marketed towards rich kids with more money than god. If you’re going to complain about about the Ocean not working outside of the US, you can pretty much bitch about all the handsets offered by Sprint and Verizon.
+13seth March 26, 2007
this looks awesome!! so, i would guess that the ocean would support landscape games as well?
+4Doug March 26, 2007
I’m into this – I’ve got a “drift” right now, and lucky for me – the thing is defective. So, maybe I can get into an Ocean for cheaper. I don’t care if this device isn’t GSM. It’s exactly what I’ve been looking for.
+5Shane Conder March 26, 2007
This is the first phone in quite a while that has made me go, “Wow, I like that!” Not only that, but they were smart and made it a CDMA phone for nice EVDO coverage on the Sprint network.
If it’d come to Verizon, I’d be out to buy it (as long as it had MedioFlo in this hypothetical).
Not many phones are exclusive for long — especially ones with such a useful design.
Does anyone know who makes this? The Helio site doesn’t seem to say…
+3Reasonability March 26, 2007
My guess is that this phone will not supplant the interest for the iphone, as Apple has an amazing way of creating the “it” factor, which Sony (Walkman), and any PC manufacturer knows. If you friend gets a really expensive iphone and you have a much cheaper Helio devide, you will not be cool, just as the same applies to ipod vs. Creative, iRiver, Samsung, and Sony. Just my guess anyway.
Just my personal feeling, but the above phone looks plastic-y, cheaper than the glass and chrome iphone…
-8Jae Barclay March 26, 2007
This is a super phone from Helio — Shane, Helio is a South Korean company, and if my memory serves me correctly it’s a brand of SK Telecom, the largest network in the mobile-mad Korea. I’ve been seeing Helio ads on Korean TV stations in New York — targeting the Korean-American and student crowd.
I’ve worked in Korea for several years – and except for the food I miss all the super gadgets/phones the most (well, that and the late night soju-sessions with buddies.)

Correction, Helio works in many countries that run CDMA, including Korea (since the parent company is in Korea). The website counts 36 countries that it has capability in. I’m traveling in Korea now and I can use my Drift fine. Actually, the signal is much better here than at home (I didn’t even realize I could get 6 bars of signal until I came here :) )

I was a true T-Mobile fan only because I truly enjoyed my Sidekick 2. My contract was up and I decided to try something new. Helio has been great! I had some issues when I first ordered my phone but the Helio customer service was right on top of it. I miss some of the T-Mobile perks but the Helio service, cost, and options have paid for themselves.
+9I have a drift right now and with the optional 2GB Micro I am using I can keep tons of music and work related items right on my phone. I am excited for the Ocean to arrive, the QWERTY keypad is what I miss the most.
If your looking for a change I highly recomend Helio.

I’ve been using Palm and Windows Mobile/Pocket PC devices for years, but this phone looks fun. I wish it had a touch screen so Soduko won’t be painful. My other concern is I have a large address book with over 1000 entries (yes, I need them all!) and most non-Smartphones can’t handle more than a few hundred.
I love the form factor on this, though!

Thanks
+2The Model G March 31, 2007
I just know that I’m switching over from Cingular to Helio as soon as the Helio Ocean phone comes out (Spring 2007) because you can get so much MORE for so much LESS! Unlimited IM, Text, Picture, Video, Internet, MySpace Mobile, GPS (GoogleMaps), plus the Buddy Beacon feature that you control whether or not your friends see you on the map on their phone. I’m just keeping it 100% real, plus I like the dual-flip feature. The style is also simple yet elegant; so I gotta give whoever came up with the phone design mad props (major credit) for the entirety of the phone.

Any idea whether the Helio Ocean supports bluetooth DUN?
+1Vincent Nguyen April 1, 2007
I thought the existing Helio devices already support Bluetooth DUN. So if that’s true, the Ocean should too. Can someone confirm?
+1mobius012 April 2, 2007
It is stereo bluetooth capable as is the Samsung drift . anyone know how fast the processor will be ? The one on my drift is sooooo slow ever since I began downloading videos and such.Does helio plan on releasing any BRAND-NAME phones of this nature? Are they ever gonna wise up and hook up with sony/ericsson?!?!!?!
+3Austin VanScyoc April 2, 2007
Any of you complaining that Helio’s phones not being GSM can stop your bitching. It is a device for anyone that wants everything all in one. I am fine that it only works in United States, the U.S. is the best country anyways. So why not have the best phones. Comparing the Ocean to the iPhone is like comparing a Ferrari(Helio Ocean) to a freakin’ Honda(iPhone). To sum it all up Helio kick just about every other cellular companies ass. Everyone that supports Helio keep spreading the word. If a cell phone company wants to be smart the would just go with the idea of a satellite coverage so there won’t be any dead spots. Also sign a contract with all the major cell phone makers so there would be various styles. Helio has done its job and I am sure they would be number 1 someday.
-5Tazonio April 3, 2007

The iphone and helio ocean are both pretty phones. But iphone has to win since its PRETTIER , works for us rich traveling kids.
-22OCdiva April 5, 2007
although all of the features are exciting….the phone does look cheap and plastic. BUT everyone is hyping up the iPhone…Y?? I can tell that it’s going to b a huge headache aside from the $500/$600 MSRP!!! Just like anything else on this earth that is completely touch screen, longevity is limited! duh!!! people need SOME buttons guys! lets think with our brains…I personally will not be saving up for either one! i’m not spending $500 on a phone that might not last throughout the 2 year contract!!! nor will I spend $300 on a phone that looks like it only cost $75 to make! unless helio comes out with some face plates or skins or some type of decor….this rich kid is pocketing her money and buying another surf board…p.s helio has great service but all of their phones have the same cheap appeal….very disappointed….
-13aiko.adonia April 5, 2007
Phonescoop did a really great job of showing this phone in a hands on video that can be found here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3R_ExzzF3k. If you are unsure about how cool the ocean will be I suggest you watch this. I know i’ll be putting away a bit until it comes out so that it won’t hurt my wallet too much! I can’t wait to upgrade from my hero. The features i’m most looking at are the ability to view full html websites (and even zoom in and out at will) and the ability to have all my e-mail services all in one app. It’s also very cool that I can take the micro SD card from my hero and just pop it right into my new ocean (once i get it of course ^_^). Now if only helio would let me buy it now…
+4N2Sprint April 10, 2007
Since Helio uses Sprint as a backbone, any word if this phone will (ever)be available direct through Sprint, or is it forever locked into the MVNO?

+1rodrigo April 10, 2007

NeutralTech_Challenged April 10, 2007
what’s a cell phone?
+3Ness April 11, 2007
I don’t know what that is either…. but i will get this device… it’s real small isn’t it?
NeutralPaul April 11, 2007
I was with Helio for 4 days… I had the Samsung Drift, their current top model. Volume on the phone is horrible, does not support mp3-ringtones, but rather yamaha mmf which is much lower quality than I’m used to at least. I cannot knock the actual reception and internet speed; it was great. The Google Maps GPS is pretty useless in my opinion; you have to configure a route before you start driving and that’s not convenient if you get lost. Verizon’s GPS service is much better in the sense that it has automatic re-routing and it dictates where to turn and when! However, everything besides that is horrible, with regards to Verizon. Browsing internet websites on the Drift is a nightmare if the website is not formatted for mobile device use; the mini-map browser feature sounds great on the Ocean. As far as bluetooth goes, the Drift could only sync contacts and a hands free device; I could not transfer songs. If some of these options are available on the Ocean, I might consider coming back to Helio; otherwise it just seems like any other cell phone company restricting its customers to purchase their songs, wallpapers, etc. [It does not seem there are restrictions with GSM phones, however].
-5Vincent Nguyen April 11, 2007
It’s unfortunate that Helio started off on the wrong foot with the phones they had! The Ocean is a key product launch for these nice folks. I’ve played with it…shot a bunch of videos (still need to be edited) and came to the conclusion that it’s the best handset released by Helio. Pantech did a good job with this unit – good thing for Helio to jump on it quick before another carrier jumped on it.
+9Shashank Tripathi April 13, 2007
Not sure what the brouhaha is about. Guys clamoring for GSM just do not get it. Apple will have EDGE, a marginally improved version of the good old granddaddy GSM.
So, firstly, EV-DO is not a bad decision.
1. EV-DO is not limited to the US. It will have partners elsewhere. KDDI in Japan for instance.
2. EV-DO is faster. Current EDGE can do a best of 90 to 135 kbps. In contrast, EV-DO and KDDI in Japan can do up to 800 kbps. In the near future, Apple’s Cingular decision means it will most likely go with HSDPA, the best speed of which is 1mbps in real world trials. By contrast, Qualcomm’s trials with EV-DO have *already* clocked 3mbps.
In any case, fast WiMax connections will soon be a reality and all of this pap won’t matter. Samsung in Korea has launched WiBro phones. Not only is this multiples of times faster, it is also significantly cheaper.
Helio is a very smart phone in comparison to the iPhone. Their interface will be be the true test of their mettle, so the jury is still out.

ive been with helio since nov. of ‘06, and i have a drift. i havent really had any problems with it, besides the fact that sometimes it does restarts itself if ur on the web and reject a phone call.
other than that, the ocean is definetly a device that you should look into. its the device of my dreams. most of my friends have sidekicks, and i refuse to sign with t-mobile, i love the fact helio has so much to offer. i currently am all in (unlimited data, which includes internet, instant messeging, photo texts or simple texts, and 500mins. for 65 a month, which is really cheap. my older bro over at sprint and lil bro over at cingular all have to end up paying close to 100 because they want to have internet and text messege options, and for them, text messeges doesn not include instant messeging, so thats another cost). now with the ocean, i wouldnt have to worry about going over my minutes because since its a qwerty phone, i can just instant messege my friends.
i cant wait for it… and it is NOT a huge phone. it only looks like it, but check the dimensions and you will see its smaller then the sidekick and looks more comfortable. with the sidekick, i found it hard to text away, but u get use to it. the ocean doesnt have those annoying ends with the keyboard in the middle like the sidekick.
and the best part of the phone, viewing full web pages which load way faster then the sidekick web (which is sloooooooooow)
NeutralCurse April 17, 2007

I hate Sprint………..forget the iPhone too, because of all the fake ads and shit I’ve seen about the unreleased phone on myspace….. it was overplayed and now looks dull…… so now that I’ve seen the Ocean… I’m getting in line for one… everyone else can go ahead drop half a grand on a phone that appears breakable upon accidentally dropping it the first time…… since Helio operates on the Sprint network…. I’m still covered no matter where I go, and that’s a big plus !!!!!!
I’m switching to Helio soon…..and that’s that… v.v
+5CHASE April 19, 2007
hey eveyone. its not hard you either like the device or you dont. if your an i-phone fan well get on an i-phone message board. the ocean will definitly wash out the i-phone. please 4-8 gb’S i would much rather have a few mem-card’s in my pocket and switch them with my moods. hmmmm….. i phone($500-600), helio ocean($300) and 2 to 2 gb mem-cards(most $80.00). you do the math. by the way cingular is the new verizon. and the way that verizon treats there customers sucks. they are too big to care for 1 customer because they can afford to lose 1-5 customers. same with cingular.(i used to be a cingular yuppie when they had the nokia 3300(music phone). but latley all phone are music phones) helio is not a phone company. try to get what they off at $65 anywhere else and watch that sales person laugh at you. really do it then whip out your Drift, or youHeat. and google the nearest helio vendor to show them what your device can do.

i’ve had my sidekick since the black & white versions, and the color, the 2, and the 3 still haven’t impressed me. as long as the ocean has AIM that is similar to the sidekick, i’m good. and hopefully you don’t lose service every 5 minutes like on the sidekick. and hopefully the battery doesn’t die after like 8 hours like the sidekick..

I spoke to a rep at Helio 4 days ago and he stated the Ocean should hit the market May 1.
Long time Sidekick 2 user, but the SK3 let me down. It was a weak toy. If Ocean has the multitasking of SK (best of breed imho) and a great camera then I’m on board. It has bluetooth, Outlook sync, fast web and all the stuff I’ve been hoping for. If they added a trackball (ala SK3 & Pearl), it would be perfect.

since Sprint appears to be the backbone of Helio, would it be logical to select the Sprint option when trying to upload ringtones from certain websites? Helio almost never appears as an option and the selections they have are Limited. I have the Drift and I’m satisfied with its functions except for when it comes to ringtones and mp3 troubles…

Anyone know if the Helio Ocean handles voice dialing? And is there any app that will let you type and store next, say, for a to do list?

The new Ocean’s launching tomorrow, and I came across a promotional code to save some serious green when you go to buy it.
==> $75 off the $295 pricetag
==> $30 Activation Fee waived
==> $25 off first four months of service ($100 total)
Go to http://www.helio.com and use the promo code B2BDGOD
I’m anxious to trade-in my Heat, even though I just got it a couple months ago…

This looks pretty sweet, but I have a number of questions:
Plug into a PC to charge/provide cell modem connection?
Support full bluetooth media controls (AVRCP/A2DP)?
How does it transfer pictures?
Will it work in other countries who use CDMA (N Korea, Canada)?
Thanks for any enlightenment!

Don’t expect a package in the mail any time soon if you order the Ocean. I took the big leap on Tuesday night (05/15/07). I was told the device would arrive in a few days tops. I called today to inquire about a tracking number. The agent told me that “everyone will be receiving their Oceans on the 22nd.”
I am not upset about the one week turn around. I am upset that Helio has made no attempt to inform me and who ever else is included in “everyone” that the orders are backed up.
I hope this is not an indication of things to come with Helio. As I stated earlier, I took the leap. Its one of those things that I am totally ready to do, but found myself wondering yesterday, “Did I do the right thing?” I can’t answer that fully, now, for at least another 5 days.

I ordered Helio’s Ocean and have been using it for about 4 days now and I gotta tell you, its a good phone but there are issues. Hopefully they can tweak the software and fine tune the users experience.
The phone has a simple interface UNTILL you use the web browser. It is beyond confusing as to how to get to some of their touted features. The browser needs better forward and back page buttons. It has a back button but needs a forword.
The video stream link section forces you to scroll through pages of video clips your not even interested in just to get to the ones you want. It would be nice if they grouped the videos by show names first and then list each episode. The main web page isn’t customizable so you cant just quick pick the sites you use daily. your forced to save them through a bookmark listing in a menu. Very annoying considering how much clicking it takes to navigate web pages.
Integration of media The phone has a nice camera and the ability to snatch images off websites. The audio player is surprisingly loud and clear. The problem starts when you want to use this media in say contact cards or use a song as a ring tone. Either the steps needed are just too complex to do, or the software isn’t sufficient in assisting the user in making it happen.
Like I said the phone is good but the software needs work. The phone’s software should make it simple to add a image from the web to a contact card, wallpaper or to select a song as a ring tone. they need to make the phone work for the user instead of the user working for the phone.

I currently have a Sidekick 3 which turned into a huge disappointment especially after using the SK2 and then realizing what more Danger could have done with the SK3. Next was the horrible service I got through T-mobile. If it wasn’t the service then it certainly was the type of service I got with that phone.
So now after over two years of being with T-mobile and using the Sidekick, I’m glad to announce I’ve ordered my Ocean and await the Helio network. I easily made this decision after going to every other major carriers websites and seeing how each only had marginal services with everyday low end phones. Needless to say, pocket phones (Microsoft) or any other pda phones, not to mention Blackberrys, are all phones that have no appeal to me.
I only hope that the Ocean meets all my expectations and more and that Helio will offer quality service, at least more so than I know T-mobile will ever be able to offer.

There has been mention here of Pantech designing the Ocean and Helio being lucky enough or smart enough to pick it up. Actually, Pantech was strictly the contract manufacturer. Helio did the design of the hardware and had the Ocean commissioned by Pantech. Helio developed the UI in house. I understand Helio went through literally hundreds of hardware prototypes to develop the final handset.
The unified messaging dashboard is brilliant. It really blurs the line between traditional cell phones and smartphones. All your incoming text, email, voice and IM messages are visible as alerts in a unified dashboard. If your IM buddy is in your contact address book the Ocean uses “presence detection” to display an icon showing which of your IM contacts are online. It also has the Yahoo!, AOL and Windows Live IM clients unified into one interface. The negotiations with the three services to pull that off took almost a year! Each wanted top billing compared to its competitors.
Also, Helio is a joint venture between SK Telecom in Korea and Earthlink in the US. The Helio website has details.

I just ordered the Ocean today. I am currently on Sprint as they had the best prices, plans, and coverage for what I need, but their customer service is the absolute worst. I stumbled onto the Helio website, made a couple of phone calls, then called Helio to order and sign up. As far as I can tell, I will be getting better coverage with Helio than I do with Sprint, and much better plans and prices…Unlimited minutes and unlimited texting, browsing, roaming, well everything basically, for 140 a month…almost 100 dollars less a month than what I currently pay..no brainer here.

2) I tried to return it, but their customer service is complete crap. They refuse to take my belt pouch back and give me a refund for it. Ive had the helio ocean for 2 days now and had a question regarding the myspace on the phone. Under contacts, there is a list of things like aim, yahoo, etc that you can highlight and it takes u directly to that contacts service. There is also a place for a myspace url under contacts but i am not able to highlight that for some reason. I figured I would be able to go under contacts and just click on the url and it would take me to that persons myspace page. My theory is that its because the phone doesnt keep u logged into myspace like it does the other internet services. I dont know the real answer but im hoping someone could help me with this.

3. (Size always matter.) Its no to big and not to small.
4. Service is great. I got on an elevator while I was on the phone and the call wasn’t dropped.

I have been with Helio since October 06, and I have been very satisfied with my Hero, then my Kickflip, then my Drift…..
I bought an Ocean a little over a month ago, the thing goes wacko 1 day after the 30 return policy is up. MP3 player screws up and it says “Initializing Device” forever. Then it says “Unable To Initialize Device”. So I formatted my memory card, reloaded everything and every single file was titled #[ COM, I try to play a file and it says “Sorry Unable To Play File”. Formatted it again, reloaded, SAME THING! I called up Helio and they had me to a hard reset and now it does the same thing except for calling it that weird #[ COM, it titles it “Untitled Content” but still won’t play any of the files. They were saying something like they were going to blacklist my ESN because I didn’t but the MP3s from Helio, what kinda crap is that?
I’ve been very satisfied with Helio but that last conversation was very disappointing. I called back and the next rep RMA’d it for me. I managed to make the rep crack up…
Beginning Of Call:
Rep: Can you verify the name on the account?
Me: My name is Ken Santarelli, the last 4 of my social is ****, my home phone number is still ***-***-****, my email address is still ***@*** and I am aware that I may be receiving an email containing a survey and in the event that I do I promise to fill it out.
End of Call:
Rep: Is there anything else I can help you with?
Me: Nope, that it!
Rep: Well, it has…
Me: It has been your pleasure assisting me, while any Helio specialist can help me in the future, for survey and quality purposes regarding our conversation, you name is?
Rep: ::rep’s name here::
Me: And your agent ID is?
Rep: ::rep’s agent ID here::
Me: I will have a good night and I hope you do too :)
Its kinda sad that I have to call them that much that I remember exactly the routine, but even though thats the case I still love Helio. I just wish that my Ocean wasn’t defective, we grew very attached. They sent out a new one for me and I will be getting it on monday, even though I’ll have a new ocean then, I’ll still miss my first one…I’m very sentimental like that.

The point here is this is the first major pushing of a 3G network with significant player behind it. Unlike current mobile carriers who just try to cash in on their current out- dated network infrastructure. The 3G network alone beats the iPhone hands down, regarless what gadget each uses.
From the review and comment posted here, I am sorry, they still tell us that the US users are still under-educated on the vast benefit of the 3G/forth coming 4G network capability and the ancient phone gadgets US carriers are supplying compares to the rest of the world.
BTW, in the 3G is running on the same frequency as the 2G, but, no one take advantages of the situation and launch major services or killer apps like Helio is doing. So this is definitely a plus. I think the carriers is having the post-bubble syndrone, as no one willing to take the plunge into new technology market to attract users without a few bankruptcyies first to get rid of the debts created by building the new infrastructure behind the new services. But, well, it doesn’t have to be that way. It just the US carrier mentality as a service provider, but, never a technology innovators like Helio, a technology company as well as a carrier.
Is this a iPhone killer? It really depends on how well informed the public is on the services. Gadget alone, like the Prada phone has very limited audiences, why? Pricing for one, a major reason, next? the network. You wonder which network CTU in 24 is running on… because it never had problems and it took no signal as a norm. It shouldn’t be.
iPhone will be running on the EDGE network, an old AT&T data network. But, also a strategic move to lock the iPhone user ot the 2 year contract. But, if Apple wants the iPhone to be a market share leader, this will not be the platform. They know it. The history is unfolding in front of us, let’s enjoy the evolution and the politics. What a thrill and what a rush…
I have the Motorola A1200, the Nokia N93i, the SonyEricsson P1, the Prada phone, the HTC, and I am looking at the Helio Ocean. And I already reserved a iPhone. But, I have no blackberry.

The ultimate verdict is in the balance currently – I am 18 phone calls and roughly 10 hours of concentrated phone time invested in this project. At this point, I have to call it a process – here is why:
Helio Ocean is a Qualcomm product made by Pantech in South Korea, and I am extemely limited as to service carriers that can fill in for the great deal that is offered at Helio. Here’s the rub:
* Helio offers excellent service plans that provide gratis web-enabled experiences, and affordable phone time inclusion
* Has the worst customer service in the world.
What started off as an inquiry about terminating my program with Helio, has ended up such an absolute catastrophe that, 2 weeks and some $300 worth of Helio-expensed discounts (battle pay) later, I am still with out service.
Yet I cling to this exceptional product. I have used an iPhone, and the cost benefit ratio greatly favors the Ocean device. Approximately half the cost with approximately 30% added benefits, the Ocean is – hands down – a better device. I know that I may get blow back from this statement – but I don’t remotely care. I implore anyone with an iPhone to try out the Ocean. It will bring you heartache – unless you take advantage of Apple’s 30 day customer service stance and quickly return it.
I am hoping that Pantech starts dealing with the big boys, and that Helio ascends to less obismal CS ratings.
Nonetheless, I dig the Ocean.

I have had the ocen for a month and a half now. The phone is great. Helio offers great celluar service. Iuse my phone alot and I ahve not had on droped call so far. The signal is stong and clear. The phone features is great i do alot of texting so the keboard comes in handy. The MP3 player is great I listen to my phone all day at work so with the 2gig mico sd card installed I have over 300 hundered songs on the phone from the napster to go service. The battery last a long time even though i still have to have 2 battries with the music playing all day as well as talking and text. Its best to have two battries. I have nothing but good things to say about helio and the ocean. Get you one today you will not be disapointed at all.

CDMA doesn’t use SIM cards. As soon as I get off the plane, I get a text message that tells me I’m roaming. No settings need to be changed.

im really looking forward to getting the ocean. i have the white drift & i HATE how everytime i try to get on the internet it shuts off my phone. they say its a manufactures defect but damn everytime i call those helio people they suck at helping try to get a new drift phone. so… i guess im better off just paying for another phone. and i want this one!

I must say that I am loving the Ocean..I was a true t-mobile customer and was with them for a very long time until I came across Helio. I think that the Ocean is great. The helio service is not bad..i have the Unlimited plan because i can talk up and text up a storm…I do however miss being able to talk in the elevator with the t-mobile service..overall the phone is great..I’m a 27 year old kid…

today i accidently dropped my ocean from about 4 ft high, and the both sliders opened up. it won’t properly close. i think the new tech spring broke on me. good thing i got the insurance through helio, but the bad thing is that i have to pay $50 for a new one. they better not give me a refurbished one.
and another rant. what’s up with the ocean’s video player? i convert mpeg files into 3gp files and watch movies and shows with my phone. but it lags so much and if i fastforward a little bit the screen freezes but the sound keeps on coming out. does all ocean video player suck?
and i can’t connect to another phone through bluetooth???

I’ve done a lot of research to get the best deal on my Ocean. HelioCellular.com gave me the best deal I could find…I clicked on their chat button and spoke to Cherie. She was super sweet, no pressure and a pleasure to work with. I will refer all my friends to her. She gave such a personal touch. Thanks HelioCellular.com.

YOU KNOW ALOT OF YOU GUYS TALK ALOT OF TRASH ABOUT THE OCEAN,BUT THE FACT IS THAT I COULD CARE LESS ABOUT WETHER OR NOT IT WORKS OVER SEAS!! YOU CAN TALK ALL YOU WANT ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT YOU’LL BE THE COOL KID AT THE PARTY WITH AN IPHONE,BUT THE FACT IS THAT YOU’LL BE THE IDIOT TO BUY A PHONE WITH LIMITED FEATURES!! JUST LIKE THOSE IDIOTS WHO PURCHASED AN IPOD MP3 PLAYER FOR 3 TIMES THE PRICE OF AN IRIVER PLAYER WITH ALL THE GOODIES THAT IPOD MAKES YOU IDIOTS PAY MORE MONEY FOR, EXTRA FEATURES. MORE GIGS,BY THE EXTRA GIG IPOD IDIOT,YOU WANNA SEE VIDEOS WELL BUY A VIDEO IPOD!! NEVER MIND THAT APPLE’S FAMOUS ICRAP IS AIMED MAINLY FOR FASHIONIST BRAINLESS DRONES WHO’S MAIN CONSERN IS HOW COOL OR PRETTY IT LOOKS AND NOT HOW MUCH THE DAM THING FREEZES!! WHY WOULD I TRUST APPLE WITH A PHONE IF THEY CANT EVEN GET THE IPODS RIGHT!!! IT’S ALL HOT AIR!!

We are the top helio dealers nationwide and are distributing throughout the Washington DC area and nationally through our online channels such as http://www.heliobuy.com. Helio is on fire, we can’t keep these on the shelf. They are doing very good and with the infusion of new capital that is pouring in from SK Telecom. This will ensure that they will not have the same fate as Ampd Mobile.

Helio service runs from primarily Sprint but also goes on Verizon… get the facts straight. It’s primary data provider is Sprint, so if you have EV-DO coverage with Verizon but not Sprint you won’t have EV-DO but can still do your thing… Bear in mind that this may even change in the future.

I wouldn’t buy helio again if my life depended on it..It is way over priced and the company is new and is still in trial period..it sold me a phone and then gave me a number from someone that owed alot of people money and they kept calling and calling and the company wouldn’t credit me for all the calls and time ..so I just cancelled ..but it was past my 30 day trial so they wanted to give me a big ass bill ..that I simply don’t think I’ll pay….and well the creditors will here from me as well..and I do plan on putting this company down as long as there are blogs and sites that allow this to happen..thank you..

You can now an ocean phone with Helio for about 150.00 to 250.00 if you shop around. Also Helio use Sprint and Verizon network. I love there phones they are kick butt. I got the Fin when it first came out and really enjoyed it but decided to trade for the Ocean. I’m on the road a lot and run up a lot of time usage. I’m talking 6000 plus a month. There unlimited plan is GREAT for me because I only pay $99 per month for all the talking I want to do, plus data…

Yes, I read that they need to verify if you will need to put down a deposit. You do get it back at the end of your contract. Go to http://www.heliocenter.com to get more info

You can get your Helio Ocean for $89 after a $50 mail in rebate. Call 1-866-964-3546 or go to http://www.HelioCellular.com and click on their chat button and mention promo Code NAECO. It’s Ocean spelled backwards.

If I were you.. I would buy a Helio phone from an Authorized Helio Dealer. Not just someone pretending to be one. The link below takes you to Helio’s website, where you’ll find Authorized Helio Dealers. On this page you’ll find, Amplified Wireless. They will sell you an Ocean for $79 and ship it for free.

I got an Ocean back at the end of January. I’m now eating the $175 early termination fee and going back to T-Mobile courtesy of Helio’s worthless customer service and all the bugs in the Ocean (my 2nd one, by the way. Had to exchange the first one because it’s battery lasted less than 6 hours WITHOUT use.) The Ocean was nice in theory. Sucks in practice.

The Helio Ocean uses Sprint’s network which is CDMA. It’s not a GSM phone, so will not work outside of the United States.

John, when you say it works fine in Korea, are you talking about voice only or all features? I get all different answers from people about the ability to use text and internet. People seem to have different experiences abroad. Above all, I want to make sure I can use text messaging while traveling in Korea since it’s free.
