Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock controller compatibility questions answered

The launch of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock is coming up quick. You can bet that we'll be bringing you all of the juicy details just as soon as I get my hands on it. I do have a tidbit of information regarding compatibility issues with the new Les Paul.

There have been rumors around that the X-Plorer will/won't work with Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. I decided to go straight to the source and find out what Red Octane had to say about compatibility of the old and new controllers. Mind you, I only talked about the 360 controllers, as they have really been the only ones in question. Hit the jump for the full transcript of my Q&A with Bryan Lam of Red Octane.

SlashGear: A lot of people have been asking if the X-Plorer is going to work on GH3Red Octane: Yes, the 360 X-Plorer guitar will indeed work on Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.SlashGear: Would it stand to reason that the Les Paul is wired the same as the X-Plorer? ie, would the Les Paul work with say GH2 for the 360Red Octane: The GHIII guitars are fully backwards compatible and will work on GHII 360.SlashGear: Naturally people are wondering if they would work for Rock Band, though I'm pretty sure you guys wouldn't have any information on thatRed Octane: Unless we had their software to test it on (which we do not), then we don't know if it's compatible.

SlashGear: Assuming that Harmonix went with a similar controller configuration to that used in Guitar Hero 2, they would in theory be compatible, no?

Red Octane: We don't have any information on this.

There you have it, The Les Paul will work on Guitar Hero 2, and The X-Plorer will work for Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. Though there's no way to actually confirm this, I would venture a guess that since the X-Plorer has been confirmed to work on Rock Band, that the Les Paul will as well. Personally, I like a little variety, so it would be nice if all of the controllers played nice together, but we'll have to wait and see.
