Face recognition is trying to identifying the face. Facial recognition is to identify the face expressions – facial. See dictionary for facial. It’s not always related to skin treatment. There is an adjective – “facial expression”.
I agree, in this article context it should’ve been face recognition as Google doesn’t seem to meant to recognize their expression.
