I purchased my Logitech Revue or how it's more commonly known, Google TV from DISH several months ago. I have to say that I am completely pleased with it. I can move easily through the screens and the apps are a work in progress but the ones that are currently on it, are awesome. I can use Netflix and Amazon, It is well worth it. Being an employee of DISH, I will say that this is only the next thing to make your regular services better!

GoogleTV reminds me of the Android launch. Look at the parallels and wait to see GoogleTV on every TV you buy in the next 5 years.

This in time will be embedded onboard and open source and brings The "App Store" to the television. Couple this with contracts to do early release premium movies/services and the possibility to have Cable Over IP in every home is a major deal!

The question will become who will execute. The stage is primed not for the Iphone/Android war or the Ipad/Android Tablet war. This will be the AppleTV, GoogleTV war.

I am calling it for the good guys this time around, Google.

Apple vs Microsoft=Microsoft
Apple vs. Google= Google

Calling it now! Open Source Here We Come!

first of all: analysts analyze things like keynote speeches. predictions aren't expressly part of their job descriptions, then they would be "predictists".

first of all (take two): the data that nobody wants another set-top box is everywhere and is used by analysts all the time. i can't help but think that if that statement were thrown out in an article bashing apple tv--as happens often--you would cheer, trumpet a product introduced three years ago as the end of apple's existence, insult steve jobs, and then, you might even ejaculate. i take that last part back...you would definitely ejaculate.

as a side-note, i can't tell you how impressed i am with your ability to count to two without screwing up. your superior intellect is truly astonishing.

secondly: if running on a mobile platform is going to make this google tv less than a hundred dollars, maybe you could tell me about all the smartphones that cost less than a hundred dollars, the only one i can think of is the year-old iphone, with a two-year sentence in the at&t prison.

thirdly (see what i did there, use your fingers, it'll help): being able to use an android phone as a remote for your google tv is great if you have an android phone, but if you don't i guess you're just s.o.l. then. you'd think the least they could do is half-ass it the apple tv does.

fourthly: the reason for mentioning ipad is that android didn't miss any of the "ipad killers" in the works, including the dell streak which comes out pretty soon. you would think that they'd take advantage of the opportunity to create some hype.

fifthly: it's true. apple never innovates. that almost all smart phones made in the last year look roughly the same, and that they all bear a striking resemblance to the iphone...purely coincidence. i normally wouldn't point out that this is sarcasm, but you were unable to count to two. on behalf of steve jobs, you're welcome for the touchscreen technology that makes android what it is. the mac and pc ads all highlighted some functionality like standard webcams, or out-of-box readiness, or lack of crashes and virus attacks, or vista being the biggest disappointment since the seinfeld finale; it wasn't just about macs being "cooler".

sixthly: if it was for developers, then maybe some examples would have been helpful, if not from google themselves, then from netflix, or hulu, or espn, or any choice developers who have done extra and especially well developing apps for the android platform. you know, like apple does.

responses like this, that just whine and bitch without making any points without holes that an average consumer (ahem) can't run an airplane through do nothing to advance the tech industry press or the people reading this. all this article serves to do, which is your intent and why i called you out, is to cry about any journalist/blogger who doesn't hate apple, and think that anything google does is the most amazing stuff on the planet based solely on the fact that they're not apple.

for the record, and i know you have your problems with memory, but the headline of the article does say that google tv is a good idea. the guy can't be that big of an apple fan-boy if he's giving the competition props in big bold letters. the article's about how google tv could--and should--be better if it's going to create a new kind of gadget.

ohh, and ya....you may not have run away, but you did bring a stick to a gunfight, which is worse. better a coward than a moron.

There is plenty of published data on consumer preferences and even more empirical evidence that consumers are generally unwilling to buy OTT boxes. Roku has bucked the trend by offering a simple value proposition at a sub-$100 price. Since no pricing has been announced, we can only go on expected BOM costs, which I expect will be higher than the Broadcom-based solutions in the market today for Netflix Watch Instantly. Yes, the I/O announcement was aimed at developers. But developers like to invest in platforms that have consumer traction. If costs come down and Google lines up additional vendors to embed GoogleTV into STBs, Google should be able to succeed here. But I said that in the column, and the rest of your objections are the fact that I'm an analyst, and that I criticized Google for not responding to the iPad. I can live with that.

First of all in your very first article (I believe) for slashgear, you state "Another reason that I don’t make specific predictions is that I simply hate being wrong: my job depends on my being both trustworthy and generally accurate, and I’m not about to jeopardize that for a bit of extra attention in the press."
First of all, where is your data supporting that consumers wont want "another" set top box, ESP when it will be built into Sony TV's and Dish Networks set top boxes. You claim was made up to support your own theory...and hardly factual.

Secondly, as far as making the box cheap. Google is partnering with Intel (along with Dish Network, Sony, Best Buy, Adobe, and Logitech), the intel chip going to be used is (I believe) based for mobile platforms, which means inherent efficiency and cost built in.

At the IO, Google DID talk about Android phones integrating with Google TV, esp in the form of a remote control. Netflix was also brought up and on board and the demo was pretty cool as well

How can something fail, that has not even begun? You start off with Apple this and Apple that WHO HOLY GOD PRAISE ALL THAT IS APPLE HOLY with your comment on ipads success being because of the iphone blah blah and how Android tablets will basically fail. The VISION you state that was lacking comes from the app makers, Google gives them an open platform to work with, they make the cool things in between. Googles vision, is to empower the people, the developers.

You seem to think that Apples success rely's on their ability to make cutting edge products (lol) blah blah...the fact is Apple (in their own words) sells "cool". The reason Apple has great success today has more to do with marketing then the products themselves and the FACT that most people cant think for themselves and simply follow the crowd. When you buy an Apple product, you now 'cool' which is what people think, hell Apples TV adds with mac and pc are enough to prove that. Point is, the ipads success has more to do with advertising and fanbois then it does technology or anything apple did specifically (other then making the product).

But in the end....this was for DEVELOPERS, and Google SPECIFICALLY stated on more then one occasion that for Google TV (and android itself) to work, they need the support of their partners and the developers to come up with cool ideas and apps.

Articles like this, that paint a negative picture about something, ESP before it even comes out do nothing to support the tech industry or the people reading this. All this article serves to do, which is your intent and why I called you out, is to put a shiny glow around apple and a dark cloud above Google. With a little more apple polish, this could easily be a Gizmodo or Wired article (we all know how blatantly pro apple they are).

I am still laughing about your "the reason I don't make specific predictions" and then call yourself an analyst.

Ohh, and ya....I did not run away.
