I wonder why didn’t Google buy SUN. Every thing would be smooth in that case.

Gosling is living in never never land. Jonathan was the CEO and replaced a block head McNealy who let the company rupture and bleeded it with the purchase of Storage Tech and some other lame idea. Than they through the whole company under the bus trying to get people to buy space on their Sun servers. They spent years pouring money into Sparc and finally thru in the towel with AMD chips. Simply stated java was a good language but no one there knew the first thing about marketing it. They let MS dominate them as did the courts. But Schwartz is right. Java patent claims or inferences by Gosling are a joke. It was open source and they were forced by their own incompetence to let it be used sans payment. They had the worst ever senior officers who should have been fired by a take over company.

Sun should be thanking Google for giving a huge boost to the relevance and longevity of Java. As long as I can remember, Sun and
Scott McNealy have been whining and have always blamed other companies for its troubles.

They may get a short term gain from these legal choices, but it will always be a big ugly stain in the face of anyone looking to adopt the Java language.

Give me a break. Sun develops a language they ultimately declare open, and now want a piece of Google’s pie because they failed to produce a product that could monetize their efforts?

Java is a language not a piece of software – android’s use is a major boon for sun/oracle… are they just gold digging or are they saying android used some bit of actual software that wasn’t open source?
