Yep! If I could change anything about Android it would be that the carriers would offer them “rooted” so that we could update without having to unroot. As Android is right now, the carriers have too much power and it ends up being almost as closed as the iPhone.

dawgone is correct, he’s not talking about how to implement Siri (people that made Iris did it in 8 hours, though it isn’t as functional), he’s talking about Siri getting old after a couple years. Just look at the iSheep right now, many are asking for a “new look” with the iPhone 5 – that the current design looks dated. It’s going to be the same way with Siri, just give it 5 years.

Props to him for actually admitting that Apple has great products. This comparison is funny to me, because of the seamless and polished feel of Siri vs the Google Voice which does what now? I think it will be fun to watch Google and Microsoft now scramble to duplicate Siri and polish it up. Which Apple will find another idea polish it up and make it beautiful and then the cycle continues. Apple doesn’t invent the wheel, it just makes it a Bentley, then the other make a Ferrari, Jaguar, Land Rover and Toyota Prius etc.
It’s a fun game that they all play and that in the end I win.

In that sense I don’t think it’s a problem. It isn’t like Siri just rips off jokes on its/her/his own time.
If you ask Siri to close the bomb-bay-doors then that is what you are looking for.
Same if you tell it you are horny or ask it how to hide a body or what the meaning of life it.
Actually in that sense I think the programming is very clever.
People who just get it may playfully ask such questions and the system is programmed to play along and give them what they are looking for. Further it is programmed to not do it statically but change its answers with slight variation.
But then when you stop using it that way, it stops behaving that way.
Honestly, if anything I bet some people would enjoy it if you could turn on more personality.
So that it answered you sarcastically or called you names or something.

I don’t think he was talking about the functionality like the contextual awareness, the star trek computer can do that too.
He was talking about the ‘personality’ of Siri, the feisty answers and the jokes and that other stuff that gets old after you have heard the same riposte 20 times.

In the end this is just silly posturing from Duarte. I applaud him having the class to say when a competitor has a nice product. But this analogy and saying they don’t want to compete that way is just insanity.
Speech recognition is a big challenge.
Probably a lot larger one than the contextual awareness frankly.
Google has already put a lot of effort into the speech reocognition and will and should continue there.
As for the contextual awareness.
It’s a good idea and they should get to work implementing similar.
It shouldn’t be hard, there are apps they could just buy up which do it – exactly as Apple did with Siri.

Franlkly there are not a lot of key words to listen for.
Who, what, where, why, when.
Alarm is a big trigger.
I am xyz is a big trigger.
We are/need should be another probably.
Then days/times etc…
The whole data set of action words or indicators it needs to listen for is probably well under 1000 words.
Well under.
Remembering context of an action or two back and working with it is probably a bigger nut but even that shouldn’t be brain surgery really.

I think you should review your facts. “[T]heir Android counterparts” have won handily this year, as measured on Sept. 28 2011. 46% bought android handsets vs. 28% buying iOS handsets in the U.S. alone (nevermind the Android dominance outside of the U.S.). Aside from things like Steve Jobs dying (which can’t happen every days) iOS is consistently losing ground on every front.

People who enjoy the freedom to use the devices that they purchase as they see fit will always gravitate to Android over iOS. Android provides a beautiful experience without the need for iron-handed techniques. iOS is eye-candy and deception. They take old ideas, polish them up to a beautiful sheen and call them “magic”, all the while Apple falsely denounces others for doing just that. Android has done beautiful things and Apple is using smoke and mirrors to pretend that it is not playing catch-up. +1 person waiting to buy a Galaxy Nexus on Nov. 17!

Apple are superb marketers of their products. But there is something to how they implement features. They place UI ease of use above all. And the public responds to that. The public also likes Android. But look at how many iPhones Verizon & Sprint sell this year compared to their Android counterparts. When the iPhone is an option, it wins. When it’s not, people who can’t get it bash it.

I agree, but there is one interesting point to Mathia’s analogy: Star Wars is more popular and makes more money than Star Trek. Star Wars is considered mainstream, while Star Trek is considered to be for geeks.

Both Google (Voice) and Microsoft (TellMe) have their own voice services… way before Apple had one, so no, they’re not “scrambling”. Apple and its fans like to act as if Apple invents everything– retroactively. Like how Jobs and co. acted as if they were having the first ever video call… in 2010.

Actually you will find that one of Microsoft’s main future technologies is based on Voice as well as motion. Xbox and Windows Phone have Microsoft Tellme technology that is semi-advanced on a consumer level atm but will evolve into something amazing as they already have much of the research there.
if you would take a look at their “Microsoft Tellme Vision for Future Interactions” video (that was released before the release of the iPhone 4S) you will see that this is what they are working on for the Xbox, PCs/Tablets and Phones.
