Does anyone know if Google did join in on the bidding, would they be able to license the patents out to Android OEM's? Makes more and more sense as to why Google taunted with their bids to jack it up.

have you ever played duck hunt on the NES, it used a light gun, the Wii was just an evolution of that system albeit with a few neat tricks. The wiimote has a gyro and accelerometer and can sense depth, what this means is that the Wii controls aren't that innovating just refreshing. Then there was the Sony eye toy, which does the same thing as the kinect - with out depth sensing- and all the other features like motion detection, object recognition and tracking and identifying body parts are done in software, many security cameras support those features and any hacker theoretically could turn a pair of webcams in to a kinect. Then don't get me started in WP7 it does absolutely the same thing as any nokia symbian, android, ios, webos, java based, blackberry phone on the market. Just because WP7 made their icons into tiles, doesn't make it innovative and besides WP7 uses a list to show available programs, how 90s is that?

There are a lot of people out there who may like one company, and dislike others. That's fine. However, it's amazing how small minded some of these people can be to completely discredit one company's achievements and innovations simply because they don't like that company.

Many people don't like Microsoft. And there are good reasons to have issues with them. But it is truly small minded to say that they are not innovative. Microsoft is innovative. And no bitter comment, no negative comment, no hate statement can change what is the truth. And the truth is Microsoft is one of the few companies that know how to change known paradigms and conventions that everyone is used to. Whether you like the feature or not, Office 2007/2010 uses the Ribbon. And the creative thinking involved to "think outside the drop-down menu" is impressive.

Give credit where credit is due. Frankwick, your comments are noted, and thank goodness for objective thinking like yours.

Thinks about the masses and file searching. Most people want to search for content and not limit it to a file name. Your mother, for example, probably wants to search on a recipe that has "paprika" but that is not in the file name. This is how most people work and they set settings for most people. Just be thankful that you since you like the old file name only searching that you can set that. For me, I prefer a complete index. I guess I am most poeple.

Are you denying that IE8 is faster than IE7? My point was that you tried to correlate acid/standards compliance to speed and that makes no sense.

How can you say Kinect is not innovative? Kinect and Wii have very little in common. Wii was innnovative, true, but Kinect is a whole new level. In fact, Kinect has no motion controllers. Sony copied that from Nintendo. Kinect has 3d sensing -- that is something that opens up HUGE possibilites. Do you understand the magnitude of this "gaming" device? This one device can detect motion, listen, sense depth, and identify body parts. It is a leap forward in what is possible. It is Minorty Report innovative.

My point about the phone was the UI. Even before Android there was WebOS. Before WebOs there was iphone. Before iphone there was BlackBerry. Before Blackberry there was Windows Mobile (pockerPC). Before WinMo there was Palm Pilot. They all built on a theme of rows of icons, in an app and out of the app. Each generation added new colors, new hw, and new animations. Windows Phone took a risk and bucked that trend of tried and true rows of icons with their Live Tile approach. Like it or not, it was "innovative" and opened up new doors for app developers. It's not kinect onnovative, but it is innovative because it is different.

Unbelievable frankwick! Where have you been?
I use Linux everyday because I don't want to deal with old news like this one.Google rox, though.
I mean, MEMS chips wrapped wrapped in shinny plastic? it's hardly an innovation. The perfect company would have the Google approach, Apple's faithful clientele and MS bs. But wait! MS products are for people that need and know only the bare minimum...

If bullies like MS and Apple overuse patents, companies will start to think twice about "inventing" a product, much less making it and offering it ti the public.

Kinect and WP7 are innovative?

Maybe if the Wii didn't already exist and iOS and Android weren't already around. Those two products are only innovative if you ignore the products that preceded them. I really find it hard to believe that you're trying to be serious, or are you really that dumb?

lots of stuff here:
1. there is no such thing as Office 2001
2. Windows 7 search is the quickest most thorough searching tool I have used. It does not, by default, index system folders, but you can add it if you want. Most users have no need to index system32.
3. What's the correlation betweens standards compliancy and speed? IE7 is less compliant than IE8. IE8 is faster. IE9 is the most compliant and an absolute blazer. There doesn't seem to be a correlation.
4. Microsoft was named the most innovative company of 2010. Kinect and Windows Phone (whether you use it or not) are both innovative products released last year. I would even argue that there is no copmany on Earth, other than MS, that could deliver a product llike Kinect.

Microsoft is very tricky on setting the legal trap, wish they used it on innovation. Actually, Microsoft does opposite of innovation. Windows XP file search is comparatively better than that of Windows 7. Office 2001 has better menus than Office 2003. Try it for yourself. IE8 is least standards complaints and works like a snail. (Yeah, Chrome forced them finally to make some improvements)
