The big difference is that even if you are dumb enought to give someone your FB credentials, they only have access to your social network data; big whoop. You're not living your entire life on there, do you? DO YOU? Yeah, anyway you should never give up that much personal freedom in the first place, but...

The G+ credentials are the same that log you into your GMail account, GWallet account etc. etc. If requesting access to someone's private email correspondence isn't illegal, I don't know what is.

I agree. I'd lie if I really wanted the job. If it was drive-by applying I'd tell them to screw themselves. The thing with Facebook though is that you can search for users, so the employer could possible tell that you were lying about not having an account. I'd have to test this but I don't have a Facebook account to configure settings in.

What kind of idiot would even consider giving access to anyone to their accounts? What right does a company have to even ask/demand such a thing. I guess this is what happens ( a million "I-told-you-so's" go out right here, right now!!! hahahahaha), when the sheople give their freedoms up so readily to allow open and free drug testing for more and more reasons, smoking prohibition, etc. The sheople want to be led. Idiots. What a crock of sheet!

Technically, they're not supposed to run a credit check on you unless your job deals with money or financials or bad credit would pose a security risk i.e. law enforcement et all. I've had some pretty good jobs where a criminal background check was run but no credit check because I wouldn't be dealing with money.

I find it more likely that Google doesn't need to because it already has such a policy. A statement denouncing the practice would be nice though. I'm pretty sure it says in there somewhere, "Don't give out your password." and also pretty sure that it doesn't say, "except for prospective employers". The correct response to such a query is, "I don't have such an account." or "OMG, how embarrassing for you to have to make such a request. What kind of unscrupulous, un-American organization would ask people for something like that? Denied, of course."

No... I take it all back. This question SHOULD be asked. If they give you the answer, then you know they can't be trusted with their own security let alone your company's.

The ACLU should also step in and deal with employers who run credit checks on prospective employees. To me, that is just as much an invasion of privacy, but Americans have stood idly by and allowed employers to use this very prejudicial information to make hiring decisions. It's absolutely disgusting the way lower and middle class America has rolled over for the upper class elite and corporate CEO's to take advantage of technology in order to discriminate. Wouldn't it be great if we had access to the credit scores of our presidents, our senators or the heads of automakers and Wall Street firms so that we could make decisions about whether or not to elect them or do business with them or even to bail them out. Perhaps it's about time we spoke up!
