i wonder if there is another source of standardization: https://lkml.org/lkml/2011/3/17/492

this is a email from Linus Torvalds ranting about the duplication of effort, and lack of coordination in the ARM world. And ARM is what powers just about every smartphone on the market right now.

Could be that this is a area touched upon by the standardization push, so that Google, and phone owners hopefully, can bypass the hardware companies, and carriers, when it comes to updates.

Not tried a motoblur "enhanced" phone, but is it possible to uninstall (or disable) it if one want to? If not i can see a benefit if this is something Google will push for (a kind of "back to defaults" button that strips the "enhancements").

Two words: Vanilla Android

Any other version is controlled, locked down, bank account draining crap. That's not what Google had mind when they released their open operating system. The problem is, Google should have done this long ago... as soon as they saw the first bloated, skinned, OEM crippled piece of crap android phone that came out.

This is definitely the only way they can compete with Apple... because this is exactly what Stevie-J would do.

There are to many OEM's. Confusing for the casual end user when you have different variants of the same OS. Lets face it, most end users are casual shoppers not up on all the latest versions of Android.

This is the only way they can beat Apple. Can't blame them. They had to reign things in a bit.

I'm torn about this move; on the one hand I would like to see Android being updated on devices faster and smoother than it has been in the past and limiting OEMs in this manner would help to solve that problem; on the other hand I don't like to see the "open" nature of Android be compromised. I think OEMs have abused the open policy to wreck the software in the name of differentiation, if bootloaders were required to be unlocked I wouldn't really care though because I could also compile my own ROM and run whatever I liked while staying up to date with the latest software and changes. The problem in the past year has been Android is only "open" to the manufacturers and they lock the end users out, which to me is the worst problem facing the platform.

Gotta agree. You can argue all day about "fragmentation" but in the end, a customer gets to see what each company can come up with and decide for themselves what to get. I like how it inspires innovation and could even make vanilla Android better if they take certain parts of the UI and change it to mimic successful top layers (like Sense UI) without going into copyright infringement.

Although I dislike what some companies are doing with the code, I am unhappy about this move. Android is becoming more closed-down -- this can only stunt innovation and decrease competition. Any positive effects of a dictatorship are bound to be short-lived and to reverse abruptly at the first serious mistake of those in charge.

Having the code open will allow for those who don't wish to modify it to compete with those who do, and the customers will be buying from the one who provides a better product. Also, seeing the code is the only way to know Google hasn't secretly turned evil.

I think this could have a positive impact in some ways. I would love to have a stock vanilla flavored Motorola Android phone. Motoblur is buggy, slows down an otherwise fast phone and just plan sucks major a$$!!! All so Moto can try to differentiate themselves! F that!!!
Motorola thinks they're going to create they're own mobile OS! Ha! They cant even get Blur right. If HTC made a high end Android with hdmi output on VZW's network, I'd smash my Droid X, light it on fire and piss the flames out!!!
