You're completely missing the point. Signing up for a Windows Live account doesn't mean Microsoft is automatically counting you as a user of Xbox Live, Office Web Apps, Hotmail, etc. Each of those services are considered separate entities, but you can use a single Windows Live account to connect to all of them if you wish.

What Google is doing here is trying to artificially pad their Google+ membership numbers by counting anyone who signs up for a single Google service as a member of EVERY Google service. That's definitely a little shady.

I don't understand what the issue is here. Are they forcing users to use all of their services? Nope.

Just because they're saying they need the other information (some of those "additional" information is needed for account recovery) doesn't automatically equal signing up for every single google services

This is nothing new. Anyone here have a .live account? It's not just email, you automatically sign up for a bunch of other services. My .live account works on a lot of Microsoft's services (both corporate and home services).

Stay away from google if you don't like the services they provide. Bundling all their services under one account makes a lot of sense. Don't want to use G+? Never visit G+. It's really that simple. Since day one, signing up for a google account gives you access to Picasa, Doc, etc and I for one, like that.

I have yet to discover a valid use for G+, other than the instant upload feature for photos and video taken with my Android phone. However, I have yet to figure out a to way easily link a shared photo with a non-G+ user, even just to send a link to another Gmail user. That seems like a basic function for a service so totally in command of my online profile.

I agree with the poster below who says Google is getting more evil by the day, but whadda we gunna do? There is no other source for all the services Google provides, or at least not all in one place and as user friendly. I'll continue to carefully expolre most of what they have to offer without trusting them much at all.

The price of freedom is eternal vigilance...

I understand the practical reasons for this move but they really should have waited on this. Just recently Google+ hit 90 million users, and impressive as it is it'll be the last impressive bit of news on the subject. By irrevocably linking Google+ to the rest of Google's services, it'll be impossible to tell how many of those new users actually wanted to use Google+ or not. I'm sure it's great and all for maintaining a consistent online environment (for example Search plus Your World is a very nice feature), but there is something to be said about keeping your services separated by default.
