Google Play Music to get podcasts April 18

Back in October word was going around that Google Play Music was going to get podcasts. That didn't happen last year and it might have led some to believe that it was a hoax or rumor. As it turns out word was just really early last year. Google Play music is now set to get Podcasts and a date for those podcasts to land has turned up this time.

It's worth noting that the date isn't from Google itself, but from NPR who sent out an email to some folks noting that its podcasts would be on the platform along with the launch of podcasts on Android and other platforms on Monday April 18. This is no surprise to some users since the podcast interface has been in testing in a few places for a while as we reported in February.

Word is that the official announcement for podcasts on Play Music will come on Monday. NPR says that it has been working with Google to ensure that public radio is represented in the Google Play environment. That might not happen again next time considering that the leak of the launch date came from NPR via emails to some people touting the launch.

The NPR email that is making the rounds reads, "Google will launch podcasts on Android and other platforms next Monday, April 18, inside of Google Play Music, a streaming service similar to Apple Music. Please note: this information is embargoed and should not be shared or promoted externally until Monday. NPR has worked with Google to ensure that public radio is represented in the Google Play environment. Learn more about adding your station's podcasts to this new platform."
