I don't own a Nexus or live in Australia, but it sounds like they did put out a 4.0.4 update for the GSM Galaxy Nexus and it caused problems.

Anyway, my point was that Nexus pretty much is the "Google phone" - were Google to begin manufacturing devices under its own brand (again, not happening) there's no reason to believe they'd be any better than the Nexus phones.

It makes no sense - the variety in hardware has definitely helped Android become as popular as it is.

The smartest thing that google could do for Jellybean is to put a theme engine in so that the manufacturers can customize the crap out of the os without affecting the underlying os. All google would have to do is make the theme engine backward compatible. On top of this, if they are using custom camera/dialer/calendar etc. apps that aren't working nice with the update, they can release it with the stock apps and add their back in when they are updated and their skin would remain on top.

The concept of the Nexus phones is to have a pure Google phone that doesn't have any of the overlays and what-not that the OEMs use.

Also - I think you forgot what the plan was. Remember, Google's original thought was that everyone would be chomping at the bit to buy a Nexus phone, so much that OEMs would rush to adopt Android, and that carriers would welcome the Nexus with open arms. None of that happened, at all. People were excited about the Nexus but had sticker shock because it was unsubsidized, and the carriers wouldn't subsidize it because they couldn't put their crapware on it, and the OEMs were slow to adopt Android because it didn't really get the hype people thought it would and they were afraid they'd get screwed by Google.

You mean like a Nexus phone?

This won't happen, and even if it did it wouldn't work out like you're saying. If Google tried it, OEMs would start adopting Windows Phone. In fact, I'm convinced that this is a big part of why they bought it - Motorola was failing and it was the only company that committed to only making Android phones.

Sure why not, I mean its not like just a few days ago a bunch of insiders were talking about moto's hardware division being sold to huawei. Its also not like Google's profit comes from ads/services tied with android meaning they're far better off with the massive scale of all manufacturers releasing android devices. /s

This is all old garbage being stirred up because of a slow news day. Come back when you have real information and not "business insiders" or "analysts". Ooo ooo I talked with a business insider who said Google was going to buy Apple and give out everything to free! An analyst said it would be good for Google because it would get rid of their competition! Am I doing it right?

For me, the Hardware sells the device, not the OS.
And since I currently refuse to leave AT+T, I am stuck with what works with them.
I don't think my average 2 1/2 year buying cycle is too long, I am always going to want a new device.
I switched OS for hardware last time, I can do it again.
Peace

No way. Not happening.

In many ways, Android is already on top and beating iPhone - and choice is one of the things people like about Android.

Also - those OEMs and their myriad phones are what helped Android get where it is, and they could easily choose to start supporting Windows Phone. Yeah, the Android enthusiasts will care, but the average consumer won't.

Thinking google can make a REAL competition to the iPhone is a JOKE!

They can make an annoucement that nobody will care about EXCEPT their loyal fan base of hacker loser geeks.... Yeah they geekosphere and the geek media will make an uproar but it will fizzle down by sundown.

NOBODY CARES ABOUT JUST ANOTHER ANDROID PHONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Android phone iPhone killers are released EVER weekend.... "OOOhhhh AAAhhhhhh", yeah you know the bottle rocket effect... Android is garbage!

Apple and its products are clearly superior to anything from android or google.

Only the geeky phone rooting community gets a 4ard-on for every new android release!

Oh ok so that means google will release these update thru THEIR OWN GOOGLE CELL PHONE SERVICE RIGHT?

Because right now... even the nexus still has carrier crap all over it from stickers to software and apps.... So how will google get around the carriers demanding to add all that crap to the phones?

Apple has the luxury of telling the carrier where to go (where the sun dont shine) with their bloatware and sticker crap... Google that luxury has NOT!

I don't like this. I am a huge android and google supporter because of the fact that they provide a platform for the world to unite around that they don't technically own. This means that your apps are portable to different manufacturers and if google decides to lock down android, the other OEM's can take the code and go off on a tangent platform under independent development. I really doubt this will happen.

I could see them collaborating on one device per year though. Samsung has made it clear that it isn't willing to put the specs in to make the Nexus series a true flagship in the sense that they always make the Galaxy S superior hardware wise (better camera, processor, etc.). I am not saying that the Galaxy Nexus isn't a flagship, it would be my choice for a new device but this is due to the software and support and not to the hardware. This would allow google to make a nexus of the highest quality (hardware wise) and show other manufacturers that if they want to use the nexus name they have to step up at the risk of diluting their own products.

Does an android phone ACTUALLY exist that in reality GOT AN UPDATE more than a year after the phone was released?

I am a full blown Apple loyalite soo I dont know much about android... But I always hear these complaints about the lack of or delay of updates...

Seriously, to all the geeky android lovers out there....

Can you name ONE or TWO top end android phones that got an update MORE THAN 12 MONTHS after it was released?

1) Not happening. No matter how you feel about those companies, Google needs them. Right now Android has the advantage of being a commodity, but if they get upset the OEMs can switch to Windows Phone. Or fork off Android like Amazon did. You might know and care about the difference, but the average consumer doesn't.

2) Nexus phones are the "Google branded phones" - if you feel this way, then get a Nexus phone.

This is true... Google always had this in mind.

Google is evil, and they want to encroach into everyones space...!

They saw how much money Apple was making by selling handsets and decided to get into the game. The only problem is that they underestimated how finely-tuned Apple's operation really is.

Sure Apple makes it look easy, but if it were that easy dont you think somebody else who has been making handsets and other electronic devices will have been able to duplicate their succes by now?

Google will fail, and like everythign else they do.... they will just throw tons of money at it, and hope something sticks. Google can afford to lose millions and millions on this venture while Moto Samsung HTC and others cannot afford to lose those millions!!!!

No Worries, nothing to see here...

Judging by how sloppy and crappy google makes code, I have NO concern over their ability to make quality hardware... It is not as easy as once thought. Just look at HTC, Dell, and Moto themselves who have FAILED over and over to match Apple's build quality, supply chain, and broad reach over parts and manufacturing to bring down prices and still have great margins.

Right now, everybody who makes android phones spends much more to actually make a prototype and get it into reality and get it to market than Apple does and they make razr (pun intended) thin margins!

Google will fail, and I am glad they will. Apple will still dominate. And I am glad they will.

And Samsung build WAAAY better phones than any other android manufacturer because they are able to see isnide Apple's strategy and copy it just lhow they copy everything else from Apple.

Original Xoom STILL without official ICS. LTE upgrade took forever to start. So on and so forth. That by itself says a lot about these two companies.

Google will shoot themselves in the foot by switching Nexus over to some Motorola, in-house operation, but that is the way of mobile electronics.

Windows Mobile was once on top, Symbian was once on top, iOS is having its glory days, and Android has as well. Who's next?

OEMs have dealt with this for ages, and they are free to roam wherever they please. As long as they stay on top of things by diversifying their portfolios, they will keep on ticking.

If I had to guess, they will just jump back over to WinMo when Android takes a dump. No harm, no foul.

I disagree. It's definitely Google's fault. The team knew going in to the project what type of work was going to be required, it should have been obvious from when they developed the initial code for the phone. It's just a failure to execute according to plan, or a lack of a plan. Something being hard does not excuse you from responsibility. It does buy some understanding, but it doesn't excuse you, especially when you stepped up to the plate to do it.

I'm glad they got ICS for the NS4G out the door finally, but the whole concept of the Nexus phones is timely updates, unless you think 5 months is timely. Then I guess everything is ok from your perspective. Which is ok too.

its different with cdma then gsm. its not googles fault. cdma networks are a pain in the ass. everything is much more crazy, you need radios, the right kernel to work with the new radios, you need to have the ability to use diag mode anyway its not google.

This is fairly disappointing. Google's already shown that they can take just as long as the OEM's to put out an update, the Nexus S 4G comes to mind, so I don't think we'll see a lot of improvement there. Google will learn the same lesson the OEM's already know, that selling new handsets makes money and updating old ones don't. I pretty much expected this to happen despite whatever statements anyone made regarding any "firewalls."

I hope this is true. I don't really care for what the other Android OEMs feel. Personally I am sick of HTC, Samsung and LG coming out with slow Android updates. There is no reason for this and I hope Google branded phones will help change this around.
