But the driving force behind the platform is 100% the OHA with little coming from the AOSP. Google takes almost no code from the XDA, Moto, Samsung or any other source. Android is far from a traditional "open source" project. For the greatest number of people (95% or more?), modifications by XDA group (based off of the AOSP) will never make it to their phones.

It is the members of the OHA that deliver TouchWiz, SenseUI, MotoBlur and shoveled on apps like Blockbuster and a dozen trial wares in an attempt to eek out some differentiation and revenue. Reminds me of the Windows 95->XP days of the computer. Like MS/Intel were the only true benefactors of desktops, Google/ARM are setting them as the winners of mobile.

Apple is off doing their own thing making profits.

Laugh it up. It isnt my fault if responders to the issues, very real issues that the Android platform is experiencing dont understand that the OHA is completely dysfunctional. The driving force behind the operating system isnt the OHA, its the Android OSP. For an open source project to thrive, it has to be funded by an eco system. Carriers take. OEMs innovate a hardware platform to deliver the project to the user, but its the developers who provide a market for the economy required to keep the project moving.

Do some research on why Android isnt doing well as far as revenue.

Its because the fragmentation, deplorable UX, terrible marketing etc drives away Developers.

I find it funny when I read posts like these because your entire premise was built on a fantasy created by the FOSS and tech sphere.

When you write:
<i>"Google had an opportunity to create a movement for the open source community by being the champion for community dependent code evolution. Instead, they took something that was initially crafted with a philosophy of transparency, and then let the world turn it into an abortion by allowing OEMs to to hide their improvements,"</i>

Go back and watch some of the videos and read the press release on the OHA. For example:

<i>"The Android platform will be made available under one of the most progressive, developer-friendly open-source licenses, <b>which gives mobile operators and device manufacturers significant freedom and flexibility to design products.</b> Next week the Alliance will release an early access software development kit to provide developers with the tools necessary to create innovative and compelling applications for the platform."</i>

Android was always about giving the primary power to the mobile operators (AKA carriers) and the device manufactures. Carriers and OEMs are members of the OHA; developers are not. They never have been nor will they ever. The Google videos when they announced Android were all about giving OEMs and carriers the chance to provide "value added benefits" (AKA as crapware) to the end user.

anybody who complains about a FREE phone is just stupid, of course you have to sign a 2 yr contract you had to do that with the old nokia 3210s back in 1999 why would that change, in order for a carrier to make huge profits it requires the equipment that allows them to sell there service, and if your looking at a cell phone then chances are you think you "need " a cell phone so your going to pay for that service weather you get a sweet free phone or not. nothing in this world is actually free and anyone who doesn't understand that is an idiot. This phone retails for $529 if you choose the smallest voice plan and then used google voice for free txt, and the 2 gb internet plan with tmobile it was $1475 (including the activation fee) over the two yr contract, subtract the phone from that cost and it brings the service to under $38 a month even if you went with a prepaid service or choose a really cheap phone you couldnt beat that since without the smartphone if you txt then you would need a txt plan which means your paying the same amount as someone who is using a smartphone getting "unlimited" data and plenty of minutes with free google voice (or one of the many free message/and VoIP services)

lol, Googles lawyer is crying that their habit of stealing IP is driving up the cost of android based phones...

" Unless we act, consumers could face rising costs for Android devices"

STOP stealing IP, license it, or start spending some money to protect your OEM's when they license YOUR Operating system. Stop being so cheap (like your user base) and invest in a patent shield.

Hell, anywhere you look you can get a free android based handset or tablet...sometimes you can get 2 free. Just give them away to anyone who will take one. That will guarantee you the market saturation and a perpetual failed marketing strategy that puts your operating system in the hands of cheap, broke ass, non paid app buying, least expensive voice and data plan having, take anything as long as its free regardless of the quality, roadmap, user experience, support or life cycle sustainment philosophy, government cheese eating android phone users who have completely driven away the App Development efforts of some talented mobile solutions coders.

Google had an opportunity to create a movement for the open source community by being the champion for community dependent code evolution. Instead, they took something that was initially crafted with a philosophy of transparency, and then let the world turn it into an abortion by allowing OEMs to to hide their improvements, didn't control its evolution with guidelines and best practices and let it turn into a revenue generator for its competition with technology licensing penalties, completely buddy fucked the OEM's who integrated Android onto quality handsets only to be sued and even banned from selling it, disgraced its early adopters and enthusiasts with fragmentation issues, poor documentation practices, sunsetting releases with no obligation or even regret that users were stuck with 6 month old technology and no way to migrate forward without substantial out of pocket investment to the carriers, and worst of all, doing all of that with no plan to ensure an ecosystem that would allow Android to be consumer dollar sustained produce...because they have created a species that thinks 'open' means 'free'

The good thing about it is....its hard to feel bad when the bulk of your customers...the ones who put getting stuff for free over any other discriminator....its Hard to feel any obligation to people you just give your product to. They don't expect excellence from you, they don't respect it or value it or even want to spend time understanding what it can really do...because they aren't emotionally or financially invested in it, and you don't mind the reputation you earn when those people tell their friends the only reason they use your product, was because it didn't cost them anything.

and its comical....and incredibly revealing of Googles mobile technology marketing retards, that they would try to attract broke ass cheapskates with a free phone...whose flagship feature is NFC and a digital wallet.

You would think they would have marketed this campaign to people who have the means to buy lots of stuff with their phone, not scouring the marketplace to fill their application screen free stuff and the one free app a day from amazon.

They don’t expect excellence from you, they don’t respect it or value it or even want to spend time understanding what it can really do…because they aren’t emotionally or financially invested in it, and you don’t mind the reputation you earn when those people tell their friends the only reason they use your product, was because it didn’t cost them anything.

and its comical….and incredibly revealing of Googles mobile technology marketing retards, that they would try to attract broke ass cheapskates with a free phone…whose flagship feature is NFC and a digital wallet.

You would think they would have marketed this campaign to people who have the means to buy lots of stuff with their phone, not scouring the marketplace to fill their application screen free stuff and the one free app a day from amazon.

2 people already commented about the deal not being 'free.' So otherwise you would pay a couple hundred for the phone (subsidized) plus agree to a 2 year contract..anyways?

Maybe I missed something the last three times I switched carriers.
