If you have a stock, non rooted i9020a Nexus S with a locked boot loader, and I do mean virgin, and would like ICS 4.0.4 running on your device in less than 15 minutes, follow these instructions, they worked flawlessly for me.

Go to manage apps, scroll down and locate Google Services Framework and clear data then immediately power off. Do Not respond to the GPS query, just power off.

When you power back up you should receive a System Update notification in your upper status bar, simply follow the prompts.

Note that this is the official update OTA direct from Google's servers, you've just succeeded in forcing the update to your device sooner than scheduled.

Furthermore this has been reported to have worked for other Nexus variants.

Important points, make sure you have at least 50% battery charge remaining, I plugged mine in at the time, and connected to wifi as the download is quite large. My update was over 168 mb's.

If the.steps above do not work at first, go to your phones.dialer and type in "*#*#checkin*#*#", you should receive a checkin succeeded notification, then repeat the steps above exactly as outlined, it should work.

Good luck and enjoy...

Why would you blame the delays on the carriers? Its Verizon/Tmobile/sprint/at&ts job to provide a device and a network to use it on. In no way do they care what software your equipment uses. Its all up to google to develop the software, and up to the manufacturer of the devices to test the said software. After approval, softare rolls out in waves from the manufacturer. Blaming the providers is retarded.

Love love my N1...it is the best built Nexus device to date. I can just image if todays specs n materials were available two yrs ago when it was put together by HTC. That is why i want HTC be given another shot as OEM of the next Nexus. The N1 failed to be a major hit and in as many hands two yrs ago bcuz of the online only Sales model by Google without store shelves or huge warehouses to compliment the sales. Almost perfect device with only a cpl gripes...low internal memory and 512 RAM and small battery.

Are you serious? The Nexus One stopped production in July, 2010. Did you really just try to compare a modern phone with one that was at end-of-life almost 2 years ago? Tell me how much support Apple gives the iPhone 3G these days. It was EOL'd about the same time as the Nexus One. Did Apple push iOS 5.1 to the 3G? No.

Like all the different versions of Windows phones out there? 6.1, 6.5, WP7, and soon Win8? None compatible with each other. Or the different iPhones? No iOS5 on iPhone 3g or below, and the next release won't load on an iPhone 3Gs. "Fragmentation" is just a buzz word that's improperly applied. If you mean that the Android users don't ALL use the same OS, that applies to every phone OS out there.

The Nexus One was a fine phone in it's day, but that day is long over. Single core 1Ghz processor, limited graphics power, 1/2 gig RAM, small screen with only 480x800 resolution, and no 4G LTE support... it's a phone that easily gets beat by pay as you go phones, let alone modern Android devices.

Good Qs...guess Google just wanted the N1 owners like myself to buy the GNex but they did a poor job making it available right after it was announced in Nov last yr. If they had released it to all carriers who wanted it from the get go and also bring the online store back to life then...they could have sold a lot more GNex than is the case now. Seems they lost that crucial sales window...right now a lot of ppl out there myself included are looking fwd to the upcoming GS3, One X, One S, some of the LG and Huawei ICS devices etc. I owned the unlocked GSM GNex for a little while b4 sending it back due to a malfunction..so i'm back to my N1 for now. As for the GNex...i loved the gorgeous HD screen and ICS but at this point for me...it is all about the GS3 or a vanilla One X if Tmo makes it known soon enuf b4 we all pounce on the GS3. NOTE TO GOOGLE...who ever they choose as the OEM of the Next Nexus plss keep the device less than 130mm tall even if it has a 4.7" screen and about 10-12" thin to accommodate a 3000mAh battery.

Fragmentation? Would you like to clarify what you mean? 80% of apps on Google Play only require Android 2.1, maybe another 10% or so require Android 2.2. Very few require Android 2.3, which 64% of Android users are running anyway. All you're losing out on is an OS update, but that doesn't mean you're losing out on anything in the app store.

what google said about the nexus line update is crap. apple is able to push i-os updates to its three versions of the iphone.... so why cant google for atleast the nexus line (og nexus, nexus s, galaxy nexus) be able to push via google itself the updates of the os as long as the phone can actually run it that is... I think its time that carriers turn into dumb pipes or that manufacturers start making their own cellphone companies as well... google now own motorola so why not buy sprint then all android device can run on sprint and also since they now own moto have only moto make android phones....

I have 3 galaxy nexus phones and 4 nexus s phones for my family and all of them have Android 4 on them The galaxy nexus phones came with ics and the nexus s phones were upgraded months ago. I don't have any special pull at Google, yet I was able to get a stable version of ics, so what is this whole article referring to? How is it that I can get all the updates for my nexus phones when the author would have you believe that the updates are unavailable, or aren't stable? Something fishy is going on here.

Sounds like an I-D-10-T error to me. Anyone who says Android is copying the iPhone seriously needs to wake up. You like the iPhone because it's simple, you don't like Android because your mind can't comprehend it. Don't blame your stupidity on a phone. You keep pressing the volume button? Really? It's in the same spot on almost every single phone. Get over yourself. These idiots have developed a software that owns over 50% of the market in phones and tablet.

I bought three new Google Nexus phones with ICS for myself, wife & son. I switched from iphones to these phones. After using these phones, we missed our iphones and regret on our decision. This ICS softwere is garbage, developed by idiots, trying to copy iphone, and we never got any update to improve it. The phone also has a stupid desion of two buttons on both sides which are anowing. The volume button keep getting pressed without need, even when you are on the phone. All of sudden you stop hearing from other person because you keep pressing the volume button (-) when you are holding it. The (-) side (volume down part of volume buttons) of this volume stopped working after 3 months; the home/power button on the other side is also very difficult to operate all the time with this size of a phone holding it in one hand. Sometimes the phone freezes without you knowing and you cannot receive calls and once you find out that its frozen, you have to shut it off and then turn it back on. I do not have time to write all of the negative aspects of this phoneand software.

This is exactly why I buy Apple. I used to carry a 3GS, which I bought in 2009. I just recently bumped up to 4S, though I was extremely happy with my 3GS, it was time for me to move on.
It did have the latest version of iOS(5.1), most of the apps support the phone, and I did get a good resale value for it. after using it for a long time. It just makes good economics sense to me. And I would certainly consider myself better than any user who bought a Nexus One a year later, still stuck with Android 2.1. And I don't think it would stand to get a good resale value.
Google and its partners feel that people should buy new phones if they need to get the latest version of the OS, and forget the people who have actually invested in the technology. I really feel that my iPhone 3GS was and it still is great value for money because I really don't need to worry about the support that I will receive for the device. Its not just the app store and the number of apps in there. It's just the amount of thought that goes in is amazing.
The rest is all stats...
