FWIW, Maps 5.0 is indeed available for and can be installed on at least some versions of Android prior to 2.0. I installed it yesterday on my trusty old G1 running Android 1.6. All of the new Maps features don't work (3D pan/zoom requires multi-touch), but some do (offline routing).

Got it on my *new* T-Mobile G2. Sigh. Great phone ... Android isn't perfect, but it's better-supported than my poor N900. But, I'm "gonna keep mah baby ... [ooh, ohhhh]".

The maps work really well. No complaints.
