It turns out that providing gigabit fiber at $75/month is a hugely profitable business opportunity, and municipalities that do broadband through things like the power utility wind up with an embarrassment of riches. It's a big expense up front though and if not done in this comprehensive methodical way like Google is doing costs more, takes longer, and is more likely to fail.

Another problem is municipalities competing with businesses unfairly using taxpayer funds. Some feel that's moving in the wrong direction.

techgeek, i see your point, but if a company chooses not do lay down the infrastructure because they might take a loss, would it be a good idea for the government to do it and take a loss? just asking, because i'm not sure how it would work exactly. are ideas like this what got us into being over 15 trillion dollars in debt?

Honestly? I won't mind if the government lays down the infrastructure needed to hit 1000mbps, if not more. What can happen there is either 1) how you pay for your water/heat or 2) have companies "lease" it and you pay the companies.

The problem I see is this
1) Monopolies exist. I know people in COUNTLESS of areas where you can (literally) only have the choice of one landline company, one cable company, one internet provider, etc....
2) I have seen countless of areas DENIED faster internet, better coverage, etc.... because X or Y company dosen't want to put the infrastructure needed because they cannot get the return on it like they can get somewhere else.

That why I strongly support the government to lay down the infrastructure needed of internet/cable (which can be the same thing), celluar phones, home phones and more. That way, we should have a lot better services and then don't have to pay an arm and a leg for it. Because right now, the companies can do whatever they want because they (literally) have a monopoly.
