I do agree with this - I'd wanted to see how Google's privacy intrusion within its services (requiring people use their full names for Google Plus and THEN, without telling them, causing that to change all their other Google settings). Complying with a law is something they need to do

I agree, except for the storage locker analogy. If you pulled up to your locker and attempted to remove items from it, but the police had a search warrant for it (maybe they suspected you in a murder) then you could be stopped from removing items. Seems fair.

I for one just hate Google +'s reach. I have no problem posting my full name on Google +. But when I do it changes ALL my other google products, to display my full name. I would never post anything I wouldn't want my vindictive boss to read under my real name (which is basically anything....my Facebook is under my real name and completely locked down) but if a google+ account suddenly makes message board posts I wrote three years ago display my full name....no thank you

I usually don't bother commenting because mostly nobody really cares...but your responses to this article intrigue me....you all seem so "blind"....nothing is private on the internet...while this may be true that does not mean that we as people do not have the right to privacy. Privacy is vital to us all and it is supposed to be guarded at all costs. If not then anything, anytime can be used against us for whatever reason. If you live in America you should already know what this is all about. People losing jobs over posts on facebook and tweets constantly causing professional problems...the lists go on and on...and why? Because all those posts were made under the assumption of privacy. The users assumed that they could use a socially accepted practice to 'vent', or share their personal feelings and they were stung for it. In general nobody has the "right" to use private information or to search for private information in order to discredit or take action with and contrary to popular opinion things posted on the internet are not automatically open for all to see, unless of course people give permission to. We do, however, have a right to privacy....why do you think that almost every company has a privacy statement clause? Its because if they violate an individual's privacy major ramifications will befall them.

Sorry for the long post...the point is don't be so glib...anything that comes out of your mouth or mind is yours...in other words you have sole ownership over everything that sputters past your lips or flashes through your mind whether it is stored electronically somewhere or not. And if it is stored then you have the right to completely delete (purge) your information whenever you choose.

Following the sentiment of the posts here you all seem like you would be completely fine with the following scenario....You go to remove your belongings from a rented storage center. As you pull up to your unit's door the manager is there to say, "sorry, but you can't take your belongings", You, "Um, Why?", Manager: "Well, in order to comply with regulations we are not allowed to let anyone have their stuff back until its been decided that they can." You; "But my clothes, furniture, electronics...everything is in there, what am I supposed to do....you have no right to do this these items are my private property." Manager: "Sorry, we have no choice you need to leave or else I will have to involve the police to escort you out." You, "Oh well, I'll go."

Of course this is not literal, but hopefully you get the idea...think...honestly please exert some type of critical thought prior to posting nonsense.....Information, communication these elements are true power ...think about it. Please think for yourself...I highly encourage it. This world needs a lot more of it. Don't be a shrugger.

Bingo. To blame Google for the fact that they have to comply with laws is the stupidest thing I''ve seen today.

Honestly, to believe you have anything approaching privacy on the internet is to believe in fiction.

What an asinine article.
This has 'broad implications' !?
What that a company has to comply with laws?
If you don't like the laws, write your rep or vote for a different one.
To play 'gotcha' because some flunky at google would not come out and say "F the man, we won't comply with the laws" is - well - as I said already, asinine.
