Finally some sanity and focus. Sometimes I long for the "good old days" when it was enough to have a GREAT camera, GPS functionality, built-in/included tethering if I want it, sufficient web browsing capability, email, and a nice file system on my phone.

Tens or hundreds of thousands of apps don't make a great mobile platform--oddly enough, Microsoft has reminded me of that with WP7. It's about how good the apps that are out there are, and how flexible those apps are. It's about a comprehensive mobile phone experience and how well the device can be integrated into our lives as a tool and not a distraction.

I think though we've strayed from that path, we are beginning to see, from stories and numbers like these, that we there are people who want to get back on track.

Platforms like iOS and Android are racing toward app obesity. Tens or hundreds of thousands of apps should not be the focus, and unlike some other things in life (ahem, ahem) more isn't better ... I'm off to retrieve my mind from the gutter.
