Back in the late 90’s the Nintendo 64 was still a hot console with quite a few awesome games in its library. One of my favorites was GoldenEye, which still remains one of my favorite first person shooters to date. Sure, the game is a bit dated, but I still bust it out from time to time. There was talk about reviving the game for XBLA, however, it just never happened. An interview with Rare’s senior software engineer Nick Burton reveals some of the details.

According to Burton “it’s incredibly hard to solve because there’s so many license holders involved. You’ve got the guys that own the license to the gaming rights now, the guys that have the license to Bond as an IP, and there are umpteen licensees.” He went on to say that Rare no longer has control of the project and that it was “locked in this no man’s land.”

This is one of those cases where giving the people what they want seems like it would be a good move. After all, with as many people that are wanting it, you’d think that they’d easily make enough money to make all parties happy.

This game was definitely a game of it’s time and reviving (and not really a revival because the game has still not died out in the eyes of many) it would be one of Rare’s (and license holder’s) smartest move’s done.
