As an engineer, I get completely frustrated with the complete lack of credible technical journalism today. The NHSTA didn’t follow the guidelines put in place for ALL cars in a serious crash … unplug the battery after crash … duh! Morons! It still took 3 weeks for the battery to go critical. Then, the take raw batteries and start beating on them to see what happens … try that with your gas tank when it’s filled. A NHSTA study done in 1990 (a ways back) showed that 3 in every 1000 cars that were involved in a crash caught fire. For serious crashes, that was 8 in 1000. Those fires were immediate (not 3 weeks) and life threatening. Journalism today is just a bunch of sensationalists, writing in way that they want to get noticed. Did I mention that my wife and I really like our Volt … it’s super quick in performance mode. NOTE: Neither I nor my wife are engineers for the auto industry -> I work on pacemakers and they have 7-10 year batteries.

We’re keeping our Volt. I’ve driven a lot of cars, but none so cool as this car. So far, we’ve got 2K miles on it and are averaging 145 miles/gallon. It’s been filled with gas once and it costs us $0.50 to charge at night. You all can keep your buggy whips and Model T Fords; I’ll put my money on this technology.

What a mess. The Gov should not have been involved period. I don’t have too much history on this but I don’t ever remember hearing about a car company buying back cars like this, “because’ consumers are worried.
