GM shows off crash test facility as it crunches a Volt

We have been talking about the Volt since 2008 when the car started catching our attention. GM was quick to say in those early days of the project that the car was not a hybrid, but an extended range electric vehicle.

The Volt is always powered by its electric motors and the gasoline engine powers a generator that can recharge the batteries when longer driving range is needed. GM sent over a link to a video of its crash test facility as a Volt was being tested for crash worthiness ahead of its launch.

The crunching of a perfectly good car is hard to watch if you are a Volt fan, but crash testing is essential and required to pass safety certifications. The most interesting part to me is that GM conducts more crash testing on vehicles than it is required to do. Check out the video below.
