The theory that droughts led to the fall of the Mayans is not new and has been one of the more popular theories for their demise for at least the past 10-15 years. In fact this is pretty typically taught in most history classes that cover the period/region.

The rainfall study itself is quite recent but its results just add support to the existing theory rather than being anything revolutionary
