Wow, some of the reactions in this article are startling self-satisfied in their assumptions. Particularly the ones demanding that the author critically think, when their own comment showed no signs of any critical thought at all. The only thing many of these comments display is a ridiculously anachronistic gender dogmatism, where gender=sex=genitals, and a gross lack of exposure to the history of science in regards to sex and sexuality, sexual politics, and sexual practices and lifestyles on the margins.

So just to come at it from the other side, and because there's no point in having a serious discussion on a comment thread: to the author, I appreciate the fact that a tech website is willing to write editorials on this kind of topic. It's a breath of fresh air within a dominantly male-heterosexual tech culture environment that mistakes its own self-understanding and self-identification as generally valid, true, and applicable to others who happen to, say, use Google Plus and Facebook.

Hmm, I'll have to think about this. I was thinking about gender more as a method of identification, not behavior. I agree that it is impossible, or at least unhealthy, to choose the behavior pattern that makes up "gender." I dispute the label of being "transphobic," though I might admit some level of ignorance on my part. There is a big difference between people who reject and fear others and people who do not understand.

I am gender-fluid. I live outside the gender binary; I am one of those "others." And I'm of two minds about the label.

On the bright side, I don't have to shoehorn myself into a category that does not fit. The existence of "other" makes people aware that there *are* people who don't count themselves as male or female in gender.

On the other: "others" are people who are marginzalized, abused, forgotten. There's us and them, and others are them.

To the average person who doesn't know me well, I'm just a guy. I don't wear Genderqueer Pride colors every day, and thus far, I don't go out with a beard and a skirt. What bothered me more about G+ originally was that gender was forced public. I could choose Male and be lying and cramming myself back into binary boxes, or Other and out myself to the world.

Thankfully they have fixed that much.

Oh please. You sound absolutely pathetic, can't you have found something better to do than get all upset about Google asking one to identify oneself prior to signing up? 'The grey area between the two stereotypical roles' is not 'of the utmost importance', and doesn't require 'the most sensitivity and privacy'.
If this had been written my anyone other than a cis guy it might have a little bit of credibility. For one thing, because facebook (and Google+?) uses pronouns, that's why it asks. But if someone doesn't want to be "she" or "he," they're screwed. There are people who don't identify as male or female ("masculine" and "feminine" roles have little or nothing to do with identification, so I don't even know why you bring that up). It's nice that Google+ gives this opportunity.

Someone linked your article, and I read through it, planning on merely replurking it to pass it along to other open minds. I tend to never read the comments on these sorts of online writings, but in this case I accidentally did.

And now I do feel the need to comment myself: if only to represent the other side of the average of the responses here. I would like to let you know that I appreciate your phrasing quite a lot. I am so relieved there are other literate persons out there who even realize this is indeed an issue, that this sheer lack of awareness of Otherness ends up being read as a confused prejudice to those who don't fit in one of the standard molds.

I notice a prevalent tendency towards this binary thinking - and not just for orientation sorting, but for any misconception that follows the simplistic formula of "if not A, then B, end of line." I think this needs to be politely brought to public attention before a lot of invisible people get left behind even further. When will come the day when multiple concurrent (and consenting) significant others are just as much the norm as one-at-a-time relationships, and when asexuals are not considered 'broken' in the eyes of all the 'normal healthy' people? Not to say that the typical homosexual or pansexual person has it easy out there yet - but they do throw themselves some awesome parades and parties, and everyone (in the western world at least) acknowledges those groups exist at all. More traditional views at least -understand- the definition of these groups, whether or not they agree morally or whatnot. Conservatives can process the -idea- of what they would consider a bizarro mirror-universe partnership, but they still can't even see the other other stacked layers, the other parallel dimensions, the fact that there can be way more than two physical sexes, literally dozens of genders, and an infinite number of ways to group up.

Yes, gender is heavily influenced by surroundings, but in the end, the individual makes a choice - and hopefully consciously. They can subscribe to a default, they can play all the sides, they can invent their own - no one answer is correct, and there are certainly more than two answers to choose from.

That all being said. I don't mind referring to myself as an 'other' for internet filing purposes - if for nothing else than I won't get served up nonsensical ads that are sex and/or gender specific. I haven't poked around on Google+ yet, but on Facebook, I never selected a gender in that drop down. You can skip it entirely. Same with Flickr. On Etsy, they go one step further and refer to a single person who does not specify as "they" - a grammatical trend I hope continues to spread. It may seem insignificant or silly, but if merely reformatted webform design can peacefully help resolve mental blockage, then those sites with a huge user base do need to know they have the power to help support that.

I am so relieved there are other literate persons out there who even realize this is indeed an issue, that this sheer lack of awareness of Otherness ends up being read as a confused prejudice to those who don’t fit in one of the standard molds.

I notice a prevalent tendency towards this binary thinking – and not just for orientation sorting, but for any misconception that follows the simplistic formula of “if not A, then B, end of line.” I think this needs to be politely brought to public attention before a lot of invisible people get left behind even further. When will come the day when multiple concurrent (and consenting) significant others are just as much the norm as one-at-a-time relationships, and when asexuals are not considered ‘broken’ in the eyes of all the ‘normal healthy’ people? Not to say that the typical homosexual or pansexual person has it easy out there yet – but they do throw themselves some awesome parades and parties, and everyone (in the western world at least) acknowledges those groups exist at all. More traditional views at least -understand- the definition of these groups, whether or not they agree morally or whatnot. Conservatives can process the -idea- of what they would consider a bizarro mirror-universe partnership, but they still can’t even see the other other stacked layers, the other parallel dimensions, the fact that there can be way more than two physical sexes, literally dozens of genders, and an infinite number of ways to group up.

Yes, gender is heavily influenced by surroundings, but in the end, the individual makes a choice – and hopefully consciously. They can subscribe to a default, they can play all the sides, they can invent their own – no one answer is correct, and there are certainly more than two answers to choose from.

That all being said. I don’t mind referring to myself as an ‘other’ for internet filing purposes – if for nothing else than I won’t get served up nonsensical ads that are sex and/or gender specific.
Really interesting article.
But I disagree somewhat, I honestly don't see anything fundamentally wrong with the drop-down gender menu. After all, asking for someones gender is not an open ended question and only presents itself with two answers: male or female. You can't be both, if you're not sure then just check what's between your legs. What would you write if you were given a blank space? I'm quite certain that most people would write male/female anyway, and then there are those people who will choose to write something odd just for the hell of it like 'not human' or 'both'. Yeah, this does tell a lot about someone's personality but there's plenty of room for that in the 'social networking/interaction' part of Facebook. No matter how odd or different anyone is they still have a gender, and if a homosexual person considers themselves to be of the opposite sex, then there's nothing stopping them from just select the opposite sex.
And if anyone wants to elaborate further on what 'gender' they consider themselves to be then they can always do that in the 'About You' section which is meant for that.
Eh. just my opinion.

I think it's quite obvious that choices such as gender are mainly used for selling advertising spots (and has no value for other people). The advertising spots have a higher value if the audience is specified. But on the other hand, if the audience is overspecified it becomes to small, and looses it's comercial value. So these stereotypes are probably very well calculated.

But "other" suggests another gender, whereas groups, communities or businesses are gender-free. Surely "not applicable" would have been the most obvious choice if that was solely what Google had in mind?

The reason "why" is actually pretty obvious- the marketing folks who are placing vast quantities of advertising on Google (and Facebook) want that information to help them decide who should get what advertisement. Most of the time it works out OK for the advertiser, although we've all seen advertisements directed at us that make no sense at all. The problem is that some advertisers are using stupid stereotypes to guide their advertising strategies.

As a quick example, my wife is a huge baseball fan. When she watches baseball on TV she ends up listening to lots of adds for supplements for "prostate health" that are utterly irrelevant to her. On the other hand, I practice yoga, so I get to see lots of advertisements on the web for women's clothing, birth control pills, etc. I just wish the advertisers would stop being so darn stupid about how they do this...
