im gonna have to disagree. since i got my iphone, VZ navigator has been replacing my garmin on a consistent basis. i mean, whats more convenient. a dedicated gps which you have to search for every time you want to use it? or a portable smartphone you just whip out of your pocket?
and besides it has 99% of the same use, i dont miss my garmin.
one problem with a smartphone, you need to get a windshield mount. a good one which i regularly use can be found here.

Author, is this a news article or an op-ed? I get the impression you've never used a good dedicated GPS. Garmin, though flawed in several areas, is still far superior to any smartphone app.
