Could the Xbox 360 see trouble in the near future due to the lack of a hard drive and built-in HD DVD player? According to Rockstar creative VP Dan Houser “Yep.”

Xbox 360 and Elite

When talking to Official Playstation Magazine Houser noted that they were encountering issues when working with the Xbox due to limitations caused by machines without hard drives and the fact that they are forced to work with the DVD format.

Though the shortcomings of the 360 seem minimal at this point, they are likely going to encounter further issues in the future. I wonder if when we will begin seeing games that require 360 owners to purchase a hard drive and HD DVD player in order for them to work.

HD DVD player won’t/can’t play games, at least not right now from my understanding. I don’t think microsoft will allow a developer to require the HDD or the HD DVD to play games. Atleast thats the corporate line right now.

What’s the big deal about using multiple DVD5/9s and people without a HDD in their XBox losing some capability/features?

It’s not as if the HDD-less versions sold especially well.
