I've been designing websites with and without flash. Flash never let me down yet. On the web it still is for animated sites the only real option. Especially if you want an online portfolio. Seems like a lot of these comments are blindly pro Steves decision. He could heve chosen for an on/off option .. He should have chosen for this!

Indeed! People often point out that enabling flash drains the battery and makes the browser slower. That's obvious: doing something costs more power than doing nothing. That's true for javascript, too: try turning it off, and your mobile browser will fly.

So when people say that Flash is slow, have they actually tried if *equivalent features* in HTML5 are faster / drain less battery power?

That said, I'm all for dropping Flash for HTML5, but until Flash dies I want to be given a choice to use it. HTML5 isn't even released yet, so HTML5 features vary from browser to browser, and might work today and be broken tomorrow as the (not yet) standard evolves.

I too must concur. I have had two iPads (16GB,4GB) now and I am quite pleased with my overall experience, but at a deeper level, I don't like being told what I do and don't like. I want to make that choice for myself. For example, Apple told us we don't want our own screen savers and backgrounds. Now we are told that we do. Why? I am reminded of when I was a child and because my mother was cold, I had to put on a jacket...regardless of whether or not I was cold. -sigh-

Wow Zach, you must do some limited surfing on the web. Maybe you have a Flash filter on your iPad that automatically reroutes you to a non-Flash site instead.

If I had a dollar for each time I needed it, I would already have the money for a Samsung Tab. :-)

Sounds to me like you did everything you could to make excuses for Flash's poor performance.

I'm actually happing that folks like yourself are intentionally misleading consumers in the direction of these first round of Android tablets; because those consumers foolish enough to buy this crap, and that's what these come down, will learn he hard way that you get what you pay for.

And this will only bode even better for Apple in the long run. As the real word spreads the word ( not some geeks trying their best to equalize the field) that these tablets suck just like their Android phone counterparts.

Apple has the right to decide how to handle this dying technology... and clearly their stock shows they are making some good decisions.

As for me... my CHOICE (since you all seem to get off over that word) is to not visit sites that rely on flash. I have my flash blocker on and refuse to give a second of my time to sloppy web site programmers who haven't found a better alternative.

So go ahead and CHOOSE flash for your site. I will CHOOSE not to partake in your stupidity and general lack of forward thinking.

There ya have it.... choice is all around us. Oh how wonderful :rolls eyes:

I have the option to eat my own crap, but I choose not to do so... same goes with Flash. Just because a piece of crap exists doesn't mean we should embrace it and claim anyone is bad for not supporting it. I say man up and call it what it is, and praise those who have shown the balls to not want status quo. If we all thought like most of you FLash lovers we'd still be using cassette tapes.

Most of you are just apple haters or flash programmers... everyone else has shown a little brain and abandoned the sinking ship that is flash.

If products are misrepresented, is that not an indictment of the said company's Marketing plan (or lack of it)?

I find it amusing when folks refer to Apple marketing as 'brilliant' - not too long ago (and yes, I am old :-)), folks used to call Apple marketing 'the worst marketing in Technology'. About the same time when every other day the press would call Apple 'beleaguered' and in 'imminent demise'.

Be patient, times do, and will change. But you already knew that :-)

About the same time when every other day the press would call Apple ‘beleaguered’ and in ‘imminent demise’.

Be patient, times do, and will change. But you already knew that :-)

The idea embodied in HTML5, of a standard which will free us from the tyranny of plug-ins is a pipe dream. While IE6 taught the web-developer community the importance of open standards, by simply not following standards, the difficulties of deploying HTML5 across multiple platforms should serve as a warning against putting total faith in open standards. Currently no one video codec can be used for all HTML5 platforms, and other features such as the Canvas tag have varying degrees of support, not to mention that the HTML5 spec is not yet complete. I believe in time, many of these issues will sort themselves out for HTML5, put this simple truth remains: Open standards are created and adopted slowly. Innovation happens at a much faster pace than an open-standard could ever keep up with. So, HTML5 is coming along to eventually take-over some common Web-browsing tasks, like playing video (and this is what an open standard should do), but don't expect plug-ins to become obsolete because innovation can't wait around for standards.

Firstly, on android devices, there's a setting to use flash on demand. You'd see a page just like on an ipad, when flash was required, a blank box appears. But with android, if you click on this box, the content loads. No toggling of settings required.

Secondly, why do you need a phone/pad that can play mp3's? There are other technologies that can do it better. How about cameraphones? Why have these, other tech exists? I don't particularly care about flash, but having the choice to use it should be available. I don't need someone telling me what I want or need to do with my device/browser. It would be equally annoying if android forced users to use flash.

Thankfully, we can choose between products and software. Apple's strategy of limiting choices to simplify the user's experience is valid and clearly the right choice for some. But Google's strategy to allow these choices appeals to a different market, and is clearly supported by others. We all should realize that a product that's right for one person may not be right for another.

The question is why do you really need flash? To view banner ads? To view cat videos? To play banner ad putt-putt games? They are ALL AVAILABLE elsewhere on the internet in non flash format. I find it bizarre that corporates will literally spend billions of dollars of ads but turn over their website to adobe so all u see is a giant blank page telling u to download flash. why? What's the fascination with flash? What exactly do you get that? I don't get it - it's like animate gifs were cool fir 3 months but it's time to move on. As independent parties verify, flash is clearly poor programming - eating50-70% of ur battery for what? People who really want flash needs to sit down and think about what exactly they want it for? Because you feel sorry adobe can't sell as many 3k software suites? Because adobe is the best so you agree with whatever they want? That's fine to be a pal of adobe but don't just oversell flash because it's really not as useful as u think it is ... And no, I don't want to toggle on and off a battery drain - it's like the old days when you could turn ur cursor into eyes - woooweeee - time to cove on to the 21st century.

Apple is pitching the iPad (and other iOS devices) as App centric computing devices. Yes they surf the web better than previous mobile OS's but with low power CPU's, gesture input, and the lack of flash, obviously not as well as a desktop OS.

I'm speculating here but perhaps Jobs saw the potential of a web centric tablet/phone/iPod and didn't like what he saw. Perhaps he saw a race to the bottom where products competed primarily on price rather than a unique experience? How could Apple compete with low margin clones?

By trying to make the iOS the premier coding platform and creating the curated App Store they have telegraphed their strategy. The strategy is app centric. If you as a customer can be persuaded to move your perception away from a web browser centric preference of information consumption and computation, to an app centric preference, then a flash free browser becomes less important (notice I didn't say not important).

Job's has said that he is skating to where the puck is going. It would be better stated he is skating to where he wants the puck to go. He also said that he is not so stubborn that he would never include Flash if the market demanded it. Considering how well the iPad has sold to date, it doesn't sound like the market is demanding flash (yet). Yes, some like those who have posted deem the lack of Flash as a deal breaker, but I am curious, what exactly is the iPad user missing that he can't access via an app? The only (deal breaking) thing I miss on my iPad is the lack of printing support and access to some of my online banking tools. The former is about to be realized but the latter is a Flash issue which may never be realized unless financial institutions start releasing apps. -which considering the number of iOS users, I imagine that day will happen soon.

As for me, I have become app centric and have found uses for my iOS devices that I never thought possible with a web browser. Cool guitar tuners, network tools, GoSkyWatch, FlipBoard, Ocarina, database apps, etc.

So how about you? Why must your tablet need to have Flash either installed or installable before you would consider using it?

Choice is great, and I have no problem with consumers making their decisions and voting with their wallets. That's how it should be. What I - and other people, seemingly - find frustrating is when products are misrepresented.

Read some of the reviews of the Tab (and, when they arrive, other Froyo tablets) and you could come away thinking that Flash makes the whole thing run like molasses and generally ruins the experience. There's no mention of the option to only load it on demand. People can't make educated choices about the right device for them if they don't have the right information to base it on.

I'd have the same reaction if I thought the iPad was being misrepresented in some way.

I just got an iPad Wednesday as a "Thank You" at work. We were given the option to keep it or upgrade it....not return. So, yes I was forced into an Apple. I did not have a problem in my upgrade. I wanted the 3G version. I have never looked into this device before. I was SHOCKED to find out (typical website not loading) that iPads did not have Flash. I guess this has been a huge issue or which I was ignorant. My son has a Droid and could not be happier.

I guess I am a PC (American) through and through....I like choice!

First, I like this straw argument about 'choice'. Maybe all those millions of iPads sold are ALL being bought by 'drones' who are being funded by government grants or something and are unaware of all the choices in the marketplace. No, no - they are ALL ignorant and don't realize what they are missing by not waiting to buy a 'tablet' (Samsung Tab or whatever is coming down the pike) on an as-yet, 'unsupported' (by Google) OS.

Second, whatever you may say about Jobs, AAPL did seemingly create a REAL market out of almost nothing - first for 'smart'-phones and now for 'tablets'. So, before you go off and whine all about AAPL, be thankful that they seem to be innovating enough and creating markets that other companies are jumping into so you can have your 'choice' of HTC or Tab or whatever. Its not like AAPL is asking the government to force all the citizens to buy their products or something :-)

Third, all this teeth-gnashing about 'Flash' - why do we care? (unless we have Adobe stock!) Why not wait and let the market decide - as it IS deciding by the tremendous growth in Android phones over the past 12 months. The ones suffering big hits are Nokia, Windows Mobile and RIM. Read the Gartner report from a few days ago.

And before you ask, yes, I am an iOS user and a Linux/Ubuntu user and a MacOS user and a Windows user - Peace.

No: because they feel Flash has problems, Apple isn't devoting resources to its support and maintenance (for the iPad/iPhone). They're instead turning those resources towards improving the rest of the user experience.

Apple is a small company and have a limited number of engineering teams and this is how they roll. They make tough decisions and are quick to jettison technology that they feel is not long for the earth. They err on the side of cutting things off too early rather than too late, and it makes them unpopular to some constituencies. (I love how someone in this thread accused them of "communism" -- does that person even know what communism means?) But the trade-off is, this strategy allows them to keep their focus on what they hope is the next big thing.

I use my ipad everyday and can count on my hands how many times i have actually needed flash. The fact that is doesn't have it is not a hindrance to me. The fact that the Tab does makes it no more appealing. I can give the ipad to my grandmother, wife, and 3 year old and the can all use it an enjoy it in its current state. When the tab crashs ,like my boss' Droidx does every other day, will he/she know that it needs a hard reset?

They fact that you are still making the argument that flash is needed tells me it is on its way out the door. You and Android can go down with the ship. I will be happy to take the picture.

Enough with the strenuous protestations. My experience is completely different. I find that Flash content causes browser crashes and "this script is running slowly -- continue or abort?" messages very frequently. Happens on Firefox, Chrome, and Safari. Other users I'm sure can corroborate that.

In fact, thinking about it, every single time my browser has ever crashed, it has been due to Flash. I can't think of a single exception.

I find it very amusing to sit here as an IT professional that has worked on and ran computer support centers for over 15 yrs and see someone post that flash has never caused their computer to crash. I would have to say if that's the case then you are one out of millions, while flash has gotten better it 5th largest call driver for our 250k user base. In my humble opinion it's a huge steaming pile of.....( insert best word here). There are two sides to every story though while I hate flash and want to see it pushed to trash heap with other antiquated technology, I don't really buy into the all or nothing either. However that being said, I will take the 2-3 day battery life life of the flash free iPad over the 1 day life of these android tabs. I will put flash into perspective for you as a company with 250k users stretching world wide we are app by app removing all flash needs. Now on one hand I am thrilled it means less trouble for me on the other hand it means Less trouble for me... Which in the long run means less to do. However i have never found a time when Microsoft or someone has released an app that didn't need a ton of support because of crap development and rushed releases....

Great article. As I read the posts, i chuckle. The apple fan comments really sound like a bunch of whiners "People generally don’t like change so sometimes you have to force-feed it." (this sounds like health care) while the android people sound, well, more reasoned. It's not just this list of responses, but where ever I go I get the same feel. Apple people feel they have something to prove while the others have a "if it works, use it" attitude. (and that includes apple products. I like apple. I also like android. Apple people can only like apple. Sorry for the rant, but I'm with Damian, Never never never has flash caused my system to crash. Never. Oh, I went to t-mobile to get mine yesterday. They were sold out... sad face.
