I don't know. I love the Galaxy S II, I really wanted the S III until I saw what it looked like. A couple of my friends were going to get the S III until they saw what it looked like, one ended up getting the S II, and the other stuck with a cheap $30 phone in hopes a nicer looking Android with decent specs is released.

I don't personally know a single person who like the design of the S III. I agree there should be a poll, I just don't think that most people would find it beautiful.

A failing post. I mean, I do have an iPhone now but why would one try to find any means of exaggerating features in the negative direction? After owning the last 4 generations of iPhone, I am seriously considering purchasing the galaxy s 3. Points included in the article are not critical enough to downplay a piece of art.

"The way Android phone hardware progresses I give them 3 months max
before someone releases a device that embarrasses the S3 in the
performance department."

That's why the year old Galaxy S2 is still just as good as the all new htc one x in recently done benchmarks, right? Right?

/sarcasm

Samsung's chips are second to none. It's embarrassing that htc's "latest and greatest" can't even handily best a year old device.

This is Samsung's attempt at the next big thing??? Really?!!
Quadcore CPU is marketing hype for the uninitiated. Currently sold devices can already match it for benchmarks, heck the Meizu MX even uses the same SoC!! The way Android phone hardware progresses I give them 3 months max before someone releases a device that embarrasses the S3 in the performance department. Your column is spot on; 10 thumbs up!!!

The reason it is this design is Apples fault. They keep suing so Samsung have to make the design non-sueworthy (!?), and make sure not to infringe on any of their patents:

*Things in brackets are how they have got around the patent

 1. a rectangular product shape with all four corners uniformly rounded; (not EXACTLY square)
 2. the front surface of the product dominated by a screen surface with black borders; (Not black, blue)
 3. as to the iPhone and iPod touch products, substantial black borders above and below the screen having roughly equal width and narrower black borders on either side of the screen having roughly equal width; (on the S III they are diffferent)
 4. as to the iPad product, substantial black borders on all sides being roughly equal in width;5. a metallic surround framing the perimeter of the top surface; (apple will sue)
 6. a display of a grid of colorful square icons with uniformly rounded corners; (not rounded)7. a bottom row of square icons (the "Springboard") set off from the other icons and that do not change as the other pages of the user interface are viewed. (they can't sue over a dock, can they? Oh, I forgot, their Apple)

The title seems a bit misleading, it should actually have been "S3 not for me". I completely agree upon what the writer says. I'm not a iPhone fan or an Android fan, I just want to see good phones being made. With all the hype created about S3 it seemed to be disappointing, the same kinda disappointment that I had when 4S was announced. I really don't bother about what people say about phones, but if you tell me that the S3 is a well built phone then it surely doesn't look that way. I would rather buy a HTC Once X instead of S3. I'm sure there are many Samsung hardcore fans and XDA developers who love Samsung, but the average person doesn't really look to XDA's approval.
I can hardly imagine what Samsung could have done, if it would follow Apple's path. And by Apple's path I mean, standardisation atleast for its Hero device. The device which it is suppose to sell in millions. I am surprised that none of the android manufacturers have tried this. By creating a standard hardware layout, they can actually create and actually exceed an eco system like the one present for iphone. The Android is capable of great stuff, but there are hardly any 3rd party manufacturers making accessories for them. The potential of the device can be only unlocked by making it pair with great accessories, e.g a great game controller, or a music console, the list can go on... but it does break my heart to see a phone with the quality of S3 coming from Android's number 1 seller. The device has really disappointed me on the fit and finish. I would certainly give HTC One X the no. 1 slot for android.

I don't think the phone design is bad. It is in fact quiet a good one. I would have (may be) disappointed if it was just the same as GSII. Just like many booed when Apple launched iPhone 4S with the same design as of the iPhone 4.

At least Samsung has taken some inspiration from the nature (as they say it), Apple did not even bother to upgrade the design for 4S.

May be I am not the creme dela creme of the tech world, but I will spend my money on GSIII for sure when it is out. After all as the author of the article states,

"Well, I mean, they are, because clearly it’s
designed for humans. I mean everyone else. In the beginning the geeks
and the nerds and the techies embraced Android, but the popularity truly
exploded when the average person began using the platform. And that’s
who Samsung is targeting now: everyone."

i agree that poking fun at the very customers you are trying to woo is STUPID. Samsung has copied Apple's marketing strategy by branding a singular Galaxy brand of flagship phones (bravo), and has the ability to make manufacturing adjustments quickly (such as their immediate change of direction on its Galaxy Tab 10 to be thinner than iPad 2).
Sending out an Apple like press invite, after pulling out of Mobile World Congress is yet another blatent, but correct, rip off of Apple's brand and marketing strategy. it is a strategy that HTC is just starting to catch on with.
Ultimately, Samsung had the chance to inspect HTC's efforts and to make the same "last minute" adjustments to the Galaxy S3 with a non plastic phne and features that don't try to mimic Apple's siri. I am Gs2 owner and am disappointed. I will get the HTC One X LTE unlocked from Canada and not pook back at Samsung tillGS4 ( Maybe "the NEW Galaxy" if they follow Apple's lead)

"I think it looks better than the Plasticky SII."

So basically the only thing that disappoints you is that it isn't made out of glass and aluminum. Other than that, it looks exactly like every other smartphone on the market.

What a dumb thing to complain about. You could argue iPhones are ugly too, since no one in their right mind uses one without wrapping it in a giant rubberized Gumby case. Metal bend. Glass shatters. I've lost count of the number of smashed up iScreens I've seen. Making something out of glass that you're going to carry around in your pocket is arguably dumb. Plastic has some give. Metal bends and glass breaks. What's the most practical material for something that is going to be falling out of your pocket at least once a day? I've never understood the industry fetish for glass phones.

The thing that disappoints me about the Galaxy is not superficial crap like that. I'm disappointed by the persistent rumor that the US version will not be quad core because for some reason no one except Qualcomm seems to be able to figure out how to make an LTE modem.

You guys like to fawn over metal unibodies but here's the thing: the S III has a user replaceable battery which makes it a big fat win over the iPhone. It has removable storage which repairs the main failure of the Nexus.

It isn't revolutionary but with those two items it managed to hit every remaining bullet point on my wish list. Who the hell cares about plastic?

Do the "general public" or "everyone" even know that Wolfson Micro WM1811 is inside S3?

No, that's a feature Samsung put in there for "us", the fans. It will make S3 the best option for music. Read up on it and be thankful Samsung actually listened!

The cmos sensor for the camera? Yes, it's the latest and greatest with a lot new features asked for by "fans" Best low light performance for any 8mpix out there. Samsung listened to the fans and put things in the software like HDR and we also wanted zero shutter lag and they provided!

The design? It's nice! How can you say otherwise? Compared to SGS and SGSII this is the best one yet! (not including Note) Printing personal opinion like it's a fact disgust me.
Fingerprints? Get some silicone.

We "the fans" also wanted better GPU-performance. So Samsung clocked the shit out of it. It's now more than we need for a year ahead, as no one will make games for android that put's S3 to it's knees anyway...

This was crap to get views. It worked, but pissed me off. The Verge was even worse though. *sigh*

Premium build = completely SHATTERING when you drop the phone, yeah, so damn premium.

You're basing premium on the premise of design, I base premium on how my phone would manage falls, slips, and possible mishaps. The iPhone 4, for as nice as it looks and feels, fails in that department.

And really? Why would anyone want to buy a case? Is that a serious statement? Tell that to the billions of dollars the smart phone accessory market generates annually. Or heck, Apple damn near required a "bumper" (which by all accounts, is a case), for actual functionality purposes.

You'd be pretty naive NOT to case up your $500 phone, unless you want to damage what is essentially money in your hand. The re-sale value of these phone's is fairly good, and I'd rather protect my phone to ensure it's value down the line, then possible damage.

Two things:

1. Before mobile phones, I don't recall a phone EVER being made of glass and/or metal. Is this somehow something terribly obvious that entrepreneurs of the past overlooked? Polycarbonates are very advanced polymers originally created as a wartime solution for stopping bullets and collateral shrapnel. A very tough, advanced material. Why is it discussed as if it is substandard?

2. What about screen size? That is a major factor and selling feature. Or, does the Jobs legacy include posthumous mind control that 3.5 inches is all anyone ever needs? (loooook into my eyes... you are faaaaalling asleeep...).

Supporting fact: iPhone screen: 3.5 inches Galaxy S3: 4.8 inches <== Almost 100% larger

I'm a Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, and iPad owner. But iPhone is still being considered miles apart from the competition? Those who think so are seriously delusional. A great phone to be sure, but one that has quickly seen worthy competition galloping right alongside and threatening to unseat as mac-daddy (pun intended).

Seems like Samsung has been too busy making fun of Apple's users and getting fed w blind admiration from their fan boys to come up better materials. Design wise this phone looks good ENOUGH. I think it looks better than the Plasticky SII. But srsly the grease-prone shiny build is a big no no. It's 2012 and we're talking the world biggest consumer electronic company. Bigger and removable battery and the SD card are great for SOME people (who think they represent the entire market). But since I dont store porn on my phone even the 16GB storage for the US version is good enough for me. Cloud storage everywhere nowadays anyway.
Remember when the One X just came out the Samsuck fan boys flooded all reviews and trashed it? Now it's your moment to shine ;))In conclusion: buy whatever phone you like and dont look back. There's no BEST anything in the world.

I don't think the iSheep campaign is misguided. Let's face it - there are those who will get an iPhone, no matter what the other phones are like, just because it's an iPhone. You can't convert these people - it is an iPhone and they want it because it's more of a fashion accessory and social status symbol rather than a piece of hardware.

The iSheep campaign is more about those who are sitting on the fence and are looking to be different, or who don't really have an emotional tie to the iPhone (they're not getting it because everyone else has one). You could go down the iPhone path with the billions - or you could open your eyes to something different. So it's not laughing in the face of the customer, because those who you are laughing at will never be a Samsung (or any other brand) customer.

For me, I am indifferent. I've had an iPhone 4 (provided by my old company) but now I am keeping an eye out for something different. I am not an iSheep, but if the iPhone is the best out there, then so be it. And I'm getting an iPad, but only because Samsung is taking it's f*cking time to get the Galaxy Note 10.1 out.

Why would anyone want buy a case to completely cover up £500+ phone, had a sgs1 and now have a 4s and the design feels premium in hand (might crack easier when dropped but put a bumper on it which does not spoil the premium design and ur good) they is just no comparison in terms of build quality, I like the s3 specs although I think mainstream phone screens really should really top out at 4.5 or 6'', I'm disappointed as I've been waiting for the s3 only to find it's design is ugly & with the same cheap materials (even like the GS2s design better, s3 is just a new ugly shape & paint job). I will now be buying the one x as unlike Samsung they have a good design team.
