The GPU will drive a game at the pixel level. The display driver will then convert the requested pixel color to the requisite subpixel intensities to best represent the color.

In other words, game developers aren't writing display drivers. They are writing a game at X by Y resolution. The display firmware will take care of changing the subpixel intensities.

So, yeah, 3D games at 1280x720 on the GN will likely not perform that well as there are 2.4x the pixels as the SGX540 was driving on the old Galaxy S.

I own a Nokia N8. Even is its old AMOLED display still amazes me with 720p videos played on its screen. If you own a super AMOLED display phone like Galaxy S1(still working properly) and dumping it for a S2 for just marginal improvement in screen performance and nothing more, you are the biggest idiot I've seen. You buy a S2 if your current phone is dated(4-7 years old) or damage then S2 is a really good buy.

Lmao! I like your answer. Yes the iPhone's screen has almost perfect sharpness and maybe the Galaxy Nexus comes very close, I don't know about the latter yet. Anyway, the point is unless you plan on having your phone's screen right up against your eyes or really intently looking for the imperfections, then you're really not gonna see much or any imperfections.

False. As some who has both the iPhone 4 AND has an SGS2- saying one is better than the other isn't that easy. Neither are better than the other. No phone touches the iPhone's sharpness but the drawback is that colors aren't nearly as vibrant and the screen is one 3.5". The SGS2 has great vibrant colors but is hard to read on FULL brightness on a MILDLY sunny day, it's definitely not as sharp as the iP4, but then again, it's size is great. You just have to decide what you cherish in a screen.

My comment stating that PenTile technology is a lower quality was poorly worded.

If the manufacturer is cramming as many as many sub-pixels into a display as possible, then aranging them into a PenTile Matrix will provide a better display quality then an RGB configuration.

If the manufacturer is using a PenTile Matrix as an excuse to reduce the number of sub-pixles required and cost, the result will be a lower quality display.

Google and Samsung seem to be doing the first option.

I think I just talked myself into preferring PenTile Technology, as long as used to improve resolution and not reduce cost.

If two displays are the same dimensions and the same resolution, the true RGB display will be slightly better than the PenTile Display. These differences will probably be almost unnoticeable on a display with a pixel density as high as the Samsung 4.65in HD Super AMOLED though.

If the displays are the same dimensions and the same number of sub-pixles (not resolution), the PenTile will have the advantage.

I would have been pissed if the Galaxy Nexus was a 4.65in 480x800 PenTile but, at this size, the 720p PenTile display should look awesome.

my only question is whether the fact that it has a pentile display is good enough reason to not consider buying the Galaxy Note?

that's the only consideration I have left to make - I do not really want to wait until March (at the earliest) for the Galaxy S III - I don't expect that any phone is going to come out with a true RGB 720p screen up until that point.

I've heard that because the Galaxy Note is 800p (or because the Galaxy Nexus is 720p), the pen-tile technology drawbacks aren't nearly as pronounced as they were on screens with lower resolutions.

I also have yet to read anything written by anyone who has actually held the Note that states contrary to the display being something to marvel at.

Thanks.

Why is it lower quality? It's a technology that can be applied to any other display technology. If governments around the world dictated that all of the world's GDP be put towards manufacturing the ultimate RGB display technology, a PenTile display using the same manufacturing process would be higher resolution because the human eye still sucks at seeing red and blue.

As for your argument about text, that naturally depends upon the size of the font. If an 'I' is one pixel wide you're screwed no matter what screen you're using. At 300+ DPI you'll have a pretty hard time telling if it's a letter on your screen or an oddly rectangular spec of dust. That said, I would say that if your phone OS insists on using fully saturated primary color backgrounds text legibility is the least of your concerns!

However, you're correct in one regard: white rectangles on black backgrounds do have a jagged transition to them on PenTile displays, but this is something that will get better with higher resolution displays, in the same way that 1st generation 1024x768 15" displays had almost-visible red, green and blue vertical stripes when displaying solid white.

Your eyes perceive green as far and away more important
than red or blue. It makes perfect sense to manufacture a display that
takes advantage of that. PenTile means higher resolution than RGB using
the /same/ manufacturing technology.

It may be the same number of subpixels as the iPhone "retina" display but it has 50% more green elements, which means for equal physical size your eye will be able to see finer detail. Anyone that understands image compression theory (hello JPEG) knows that to a human eye green is about as important as red and blue combined, which is why JPEG compression* immediately strips a third of the information in a picture by halving the data devoted to red and blue. This is not at all unlike what PenTile displays do by omitting half the red and blue elements.

Taken to the extreme, if you could only see green wouldn't it make a lot more sense to make screens with 3 times the resolution using the same manufacturing technology by only using green elements? Well PenTile goes a partial step in that direction by admitting that we're human and have human eyes with human eye limitations and that we kinda suck at seeing red and blue. Our eyes are made of meat; they aren't engineered cameras equally sensitive to red, green and blue.

*This isn't exactly what it does as there's a lot more crazy hoops that JPEG jumps through, but it's close enough for this level of discussion as it fundamentally does exploit
this concept.

Can you guys compare the Nexus screen with Razr's. I'm on the fence with these two phones, but I m really leaning towards the Razr because it's design is so incredible. The screen looks fabulous on the Razr, but that resolution is lower. What do you guys think?

Something tells me it's not fragmentation that's preventing you from buying. The Galaxy Nexus is the first phone to feature ICS and it's not out yet; saying that there is still fragmentation because of this is like saying that there was fragmentation in iOS because the iPhone 4S had iOS5 on it when they demoed it.

Look at the second video. Fragmentation still exists. I wish they would address this already. This is one of the big reasons I do not buy any Android based phones. Additionally, I believe the OS is visually unpolished.

regardless of what it is, you are getting retina display like sharpness on a screen 1.15 inches larger than the iphone's retina display. the galaxy s 2 has horrible pixel density, everything looks enormous

To add to my previous comment, I am not a fan of PenTile Matrix technology. PenTile is definitely a lower quality technology but it is not 30% worse than standard RGB displays. And just because it is PenTile does not mean you can degrade its ppi spec. The true drawbacks of PenTile technology should be discussed, not made up or incorrectly adjusted specs. For example, PenTile cannot display text as clearly when the background is a fully saturated primary color.

Thanks for clarifying the finer points of this.. engadget failed..

Side note, people have the concepts of "reference design" and "flagship" confused...

The nexus is googles ICS reference handset.. the gs2 is still the flagship of Samsung's line. I'm fairly sure only the nexus 1 was the only instance of the.reference handset also being the mfrs flagship.
