If you go to Texas Instrument's website you will see the 4460 clocks at 1.5 ghz for all ghzfreaks. That being said it is underclocked probably for battery. So if your concerned about benchmarks overclock it to a stable 1.5 ghz and enjoy :) No phone w similar specs will outperform this phone on reliability and performance while maintaining decent battery life.
Maybe. . . but you are going off rumors at this point. And let's say that it does come out next month but has terrible battery life, would you still want it?

And how's the battery life on most of HTC's LTE phones? Total crap!

Not to mention that clock speed isn't everything. The old version of this OMAP processor is in the PlayBook and it pushes 1080p video while multitasking while the ipad 2 & Tegra 2 chips can't compete.

It's about over-all performance not just GHz. And from the reviews I've seen of the gNexus, it looks like Google put together a very good over-all package.

I've seen that else where as well. And is seems to be a very valid argument especially considering some of the battery life issues we are seeing--the OMAP 4 still gets good battery life on LTE.

Not to mentions, the processor will most likely handle anything thrown at it over the next couple of years. The older version of this processor is in the PlayBook and that is (soon was) the only tablet that could output 1080p directly AND do something else--the great iPad 2 can't do it and the Tegra 2 can't.

Sometimes I think there's people spewing all this FUD about the Nexus not having THE top of the line specs just to detract from the reality that it's an "all around great device"--no software updates to worry about, optimized by Google for the hardware, all around good performance, etc.

I don't see the need for the "fastest processor" in a phone if it's going to kill the battery life. I would much rather have an all around great performing device. Specs only count for so much.

And TI are making some great SoC.

The problem is, by the time someone comes up with an o/c kernel, the GS2 will have one, it already has a 1.5ghz dual core (I have the T-Mobile version), pushing both equally hard, the GS2 will still leave it behind.
Aside from the screen size and screen resolution, the GS2 is really the way to go. The GS2s 1.5ghz dual core and 4.52in screen still push it right to the top. I just benchmarked my GS2, after a long day, with several apps currently open, it benched at 3047 on quadrant standard. My phone is 100% stock, only rooted so I can use titanium backup and root explorer. I can only imagine what this phones capable of with a clean and vanilla copy of ICS. I came from a vibrant, rooted and pushed to a stable 1.6ghz, this phone makes my vibrant look like it's standing still. The Nexus is an impressive piece of hardware, but not enough so to topplethe GS2. Samsung never ceases to amaze.

except lot of these tests are graphics tests and it won't impact the score as much. As much as people justify lower scores with resolution on tests like quadrant, it accounts for very small portion of the test score

uh. . .because the OMAP4 4470 won't be out till the first half of 2012. . .
So, my guess is Google wanted the device out before the holiday season in 2011.

There are other reasons Google chose the OMAP. . . phonearena and others have written some good articles about that. All in all, from what I've read it's a great chip for this device at this point in time. Of course in a few months there will be phones supporting more powerful chips but that's the world of mobile tech right now--it's advancing at a very fast pace thanks to the open competitive nature of the ARM architecture = good stuff. Nonetheless, this chip should give this device very good performance along with good battery life while supporting high-speed data.

precisely. . .
However, GS II may do even better once it gets ICS. We'll have to see. Nonetheless, gNexus is looking pretty darn good with those benchmarks and supporting 4.6" 1280X720 res.
