Nokia launching HTML5 map app for iOS, Android

Nokia Maps will soon be getting an HTML5 version so that it can be used on all mobile operating systems, especially the popular iOS and Android platforms. Formerly known as Ovi Maps, Nokia's map service has had a long history on Symbian handsets and could potentially rival Google Maps.

The HTML5 beta version of Nokia Maps is already available. All you have to do is head over to m.maps.nokia.com on your mobile browser to give it a try. The interface is clean and looks just like a native app. It currently offers regular Map view, Satellite view, Public transport view, and Live traffic view.

The map also offers pinch-to-zoom, routing directions for either walking or driving, saving favorite locations, and should be able to detect your current location. However, our tests using it were not able to get that to work. This is still beta, so it will be interesting to see how this develops and what role Nokia Map will play in the Windows Phone 7 ecosystem.
