Freiya smart watering can helps keep your plants alive

Spring is nearing in many places, and that means it is time to start planting one's flowers and herbs. Not everyone has a green thumb, though, and planting is sometimes followed shortly after with a drooping or dead plant. Like all things, technology is swooping in to help address that issue, and thusly enters Freiya, a smart watering can that works in conjunction with one's smartphone to make sure you never forget to water (or end up over-watering) your plants.

Freiya has a unique modern design that doesn't immediately make one think that's a watering can (which isn't a criticism). It features motion sensors and Bluetooth LE, as well as a related smartphone app for Android and iOS complemented by a plants database detailing watering guidelines. The database is used to see how often one's plant should be watered, obviously, while the rest of the tech makes sure you don't forget.

The maker describes the app as the brains of the operation, pulling in the data from the watering can's sensor to make sense of what you're doing. It keeps track of when a plant is watered, the temperature, and pushes notifications for when you need to water or, if necessary, when you need to add some fertilizer. It can also be used to share information with others, such as a friend you're going to have watering your plants while you're away.

The maker behind Freiya is seeking $48,000 on Kickstarter, and has thus far raised about $6,000 with 50 days remaining. The early bird unit is priced at $69, and will start shipping globally to backers this upcoming December. The retail price will eventually be about $120 USD.
