iPhone Would you pay $499 or $599 for an iPhone if you got 18 months of service for free? That’s the question Cingular/ATT seems to be pondering. Apple is putting pressure on Cingular/ATT not to discount the much-anticipated device, and the wireless giant is looking toward alternative strategies to do just that. This certainly would be a bold move by the newly-acquired provider Will this be a preview of things to come from the Cingular/ATT merger? Only time will tell.

This latest rumor comes from CNBC’s Jim Cramer. He belives that Cingular/ATT is trying to sway users of Verizon Wireless to make the switch by offering them free long-term contracts when they purchase one of the year’s hottest phones. Let’s just keep hoping that this type of competition pays off for the average consumer.

This is a no-brainer. 18 mos. x $39.99 (my current monthly rate) = $720.00. I have a feeling this deal will only be for those who are switching.

Are you sure it isn’t a free data plan for 18 months for iPhone purchaser that is being considered?

I’m pretty sure this rumour’s been squashed already, BUT yes, if the iPhone came with 1.5 years of service included in the price I’d grab it in a hot second. That is, I would if I weren’t already 6 months into a 24 month contract with Cingular. And I don’t like them very much, either.

The thing is Cingular 2 years contract is really pissing me off, and i swear i wont stick with them

I agree that the 2-year contract sucks big time. It’s an unfortunate price we have to pay to get the iPhone.

I think you’re right Bruce, the rumor was squashed but June is still a long way away and Cingular/ATT may end of doing some special promo to draw subscribers from other carriers. We currently have half a dozen or so phones with T-Mo…I’d be more than happy to switch the team over to Cingular.

If something sounds too good to be true… I love the idea of the iphone but the wait and cost might be prohibitive. Anyone see the new user friendly affordable Celltop from Alltel? It’s worth a look at http://www.mycelltop.com.
