Thank you for the insight. Is it always just about making money for the shareholders and always building for the lowest price, using factories where there is little care for the health of the employees. It wasn't too long ago that people were jumping out of the windows of Foxconn committing suicide.

If I understand what you are saying then USA is screwed for manufacturing unless we have the raw materials. I don't understand how the companies in this country that manufacture are able to employ USA workers, compete and profitable. They have the opportunity to offshore but have decided not to.

We buy so much from China, send our money to China so they can in turn loan it back to the government at a high interest rate! Isn't that smart on our part. The Chinese are laughing at us. So how do we break mentality to manufacture in China with the thinking it is always cheaper when it isn't. We need to start making more things in the country. We need the Apple's in Silicon Valley to invest in manufacturing in the USA, make more things in the USA even if it means making lesser profit. Time to think about making this country a better place to live and show true patriotism and not just filling the pockets of the shareholders.

I am familiar with manufacturing and I know of many USA based electronic OEMs who used to go to China to manufacture are now returning. Why? Because the quality in China sucks? Go to China and you will see why the plant blew up. I visited factories in China and not one of them would have passed any electrical code. I know someone will argue the point. But in reality they do have codes but they are not implemented or monitored. Seeing things manufactured in China is an experience you won't forget! Just watch the Foxconn video as a starter. How many times does this happen every day but we don't hear about. I am surprised these events aren't reported at the smaller companies.

Simple, cost. Manufacturing in the US costs much more, which means more expensive products, which are therefore less competitive. We, collectively, want cheap prices. Why do you think manufacturing keeps moving to the countries with the lowest labor costs in the first place? It isn't a whim, and it isn't just pure profit for companies. It isn't like they keep prices the same and drop their costs, products get cheaper too - AND there is pressure, from investors, the stock market, etc., to show a reasonable profit. So to meet consumer demand for cheap products, be competitive with other vendors, and satisfy the market, companies seek lower costs. And manufacturing in China, Mexico, etc., costs less, even including shipping the products to market, than producing them in the US. Labor costs are just too high in the US for most consumer products, ironically a side effect of our higher standard of living and higher expected income levels.

Is this a wake up call for Apple?. Could this event be a message that should not go unheeded. Maybe it is time for Apple to step up to the plate and do the right thing and start building products in the USA. This initiative would show the way for other OEM's and collectively the offshore builders and start a new wave of USA manufacturing, create more jobs in the USA, help the economy in our time of need. Apple if your so patriotic, why do you prefer to support the Chinese government subsidized economy and not support the USA economy?

Do mean like GOD? Since it's most likely an Act of God (Lightning Strike) that caused the explosion in either the mirror (where Super Fine Dust particulates are in the air) section of manufacturing or in the Anodizing of the back cover. Where explosions or fire are notoriously possible. Just an errant electrical spark, lighted cigarette, or lightning strike can cause it and Lightning Strikes were seen hitting the building around that time!!!
