I've used Packet8.net for some time now and they have very good service and low rates too. The best solution I found was to subscribe to two accounts on Packet8. Then send one of the "box" over to your family in Japan. The box your sending over has a local US phone number. Since it's an Internet phone, the box can be plugged right into the Internet and when you call the local number, it gets routed to taht box. I did this with our editor in Singapore Ahbao, it works awesome! The monthly service is around $20 and you'd get 100% free international calls to Japan. I hope this helps.
This is what I found their rates for Japan:
Find Results - "japan" Destination Country-City Code Rate Japan - All other prefixes 81- $0.04 Japan - Mobile & premium 81-20 $0.16 Japan - Mobile & premium 81-60 $0.16 Japan - Mobile & premium 81-70 $0.16 Japan - Mobile & premium 81-80 $0.16 Japan - Mobile & premium 81-90 $0.16 Japan-IP Phone 81-50 $0.04 Japan-Osaka 81-6 $0.04 Japan-Special 81-800 $0.19 Japan-Tokyo 81-3 $0.04

Hey ewdison, I will second that! Only thing is, skype isn't geared towards home-phone as much as vonage is.
Lacking Features: - No 911 Service (Fire seems like a problem anybody!?) - I found the external phones don't work very well.... - You need PC turned on - Only one phone per account.
I also have skype in. But I would not consider switching to it as a home-based phone.

Definitely Unia Telecom as an alternative to Vonage - sounds like they're the good guys. at least they try. visited the site http://www.uniatelecom.com and also called them and was surprised to learn their whole operation is US based, unlike the other providers quick to run to India. they seem to be very well footed and reliable..tested the service too. Regardless, the fact that they give a percentage of their earnings to humane / humanitarian causes will definitely serve them very well in the future...thinking of signing up for the service.... Great Vonage alternative

went to the Unia Telecom site. www.uniatelecom.com good Connecticut VOIP phone service provider. Great alternative to Vonage or SunRocket! Apparently, they have a cap on subscribers they're willing to service. According to the CSR I spoke with, no more than 5K users at any given time. Said they want to ensure preservation of quality service delivery by not having too many subscribers. Surely makes sense. Definitely signing up now...... Mike

Seems somewhat pricy to me, I don't pay the phone bill now but I think ours is a little cheaper than that. Not quite sure though...

I think to generally avoid those providers that solely compete on price. I mean you get what you pay for. Most people complain about service but they forget the reason they signed up in the first place is because it was cheap. Cheap service = well..cheap service! I did sign up with them...especially since they're a socially responsible operation with humanitarian support and they help keep jobs in the US. Maybe because I'm an old geyser but that sure works for me! Only issue with VOIP in general though you need a good net connection and somewhat know what you're doing. Great company...will recommend Unia Telecom as a Vonage alternative.

Guitarman74, you must really like this hosting service or you work for them as all of your posts have been centered around that exact business.
