Well, overselling isn't bad, but when it comes to overloaded overselling. When it gets to where companies oversell so much that if you use just a little too much CPU or memory, and they suspend you than that's bad. Companies that are so rigid and can't bend if you need just a little extra this week, is what's bad. Overselling is necessary in this industry, and a little overselling doesn't hurt. Think of it this way, you have a dedicated server with 250GB HD and 1500GB of Bandwidth. Let's say I had clients that filled that server up, and their quotas filled the server. Now what if those customers didn't actually use all of the resources. Let's say they used only 150GB of the hard drive and they only used 900GB of bandwidth, what would the hosting provider do with the other 100GB of space and the other 600GB of bandwidth? Why should they let it go to waste? That's why host oversell a bit, so that that waste gets sold out. It makes it profitable for them, but yet keeping your prices low.

The thing is not everything is measurable. I do oversell sometimes but at the end of the month, it never reach my quota. It's just the way hosting business goes like it or not.

Not mine. I refuse to do that to a client, even taking a small chance and barely overselling is still a waste to me. I don't want my clients even having a slight chance of not getting what they pay for. I treat my clients like I would want my own hosting provider to treat me (well I am my own hosting provider, but I think you get where I'm trying to go with this lol). A company does not have to oversell to make a profit and have clients happy.

I agree, that's how I run my company as well. I don't oversell, because I don't believe in it, but I can see why many hosts do oversell though. I believe that hosting should be flexible, and if the customer needs something, I think the host should bend as much as possible to accomodate it. I know that some solutions won't work because of performance impact and stuff like that, but anything that can be done should be done. I used to be with Total Choice Hosting a while back, and I enjoyed my stay as far as uptime and support goes, but I needed realistic diskspace and bandwidth. I also wanted the ability to accomodate my clients request. My clients requested a site builder, so I installed one. My clients asked for PHP5, so I installed it.

Yea, I feel the same as Hycari but then there is the extent when sites offer 100 MBs for $6/mo that's too expensive for the little you get. But I think it should be between realistic stage. If it is then it is good but I feel that someone shouldn't have to pay a ton for hosting but yet it doesn't look unbelievably fake what is being given.

Yeah, that's a good point too. I've seen a lot of hosts charge high prices for something that shouldn't be that high. I've seen one host charge 9.95 per month for 100MB of web space, 250MB of bandwidth, and 1 e-mail box. For 9.95 a month, you should be able to find over 2,000MB of space, and around 25,000MB bandwidth.

Yea, I don't like overselling to so high it is unbelievable and then hosts charging TOO much for hosting. Like theres more than 100 MBs if you split the how much money you want divided by server resources. There has to usually be a minimum of 80 gigs. And if each person is paying $10 for 100 mbs and to reach the server limit they would be making almost double if not triple the amount of the server.
