Well, overselling isn't bad, but when it comes to overloaded overselling. When it gets to where companies oversell so much that if you use just a little too much CPU or memory, and they suspend you than that's bad. Companies that are so rigid and can't bend if you need just a little extra this week, is what's bad. Overselling is necessary in this industry, and a little overselling doesn't hurt. Think of it this way, you have a dedicated server with 250GB HD and 1500GB of Bandwidth. Let's say I had clients that filled that server up, and their quotas filled the server. Now what if those customers didn't actually use all of the resources. Let's say they used only 150GB of the hard drive and they only used 900GB of bandwidth, what would the hosting provider do with the other 100GB of space and the other 600GB of bandwidth? Why should they let it go to waste? That's why host oversell a bit, so that that waste gets sold out. It makes it profitable for them, but yet keeping your prices low.
