I have two laptops and they have one common problem-- battery. How do we maintain laptop batteries so that we can extend their lifespan? The cost of replacing my batteries is quite expensive so I have to settle using my power adapter.
I think the rule of thumb is you have to drain your battery first before you charge. This is an interesting artcle about maintaining laptop batteries http://hardwarehell.com/battery.htm .

My laptop is already 3 years and have not replaced yet the battery. When I am home, I make sure I use my power adapter. The battery is being charged while I am using my laptop. I got a spare battery for my travels. I use the spare when the main battery is drained. When I got home, I just use again my power adapter charging the drained battery.
I'd say to make sure you let it charge up all the way, and make sure you don't charge it again until it's almost completely drained. Also, you should probably try shutting the screen when you're not using it.
My laptop lasts a while... I only charge it once or twice a week and I only charge it when the screen tells me to.
