What good of this tablet if there are millions of illiterate population in India? I think this is just an Indian government show off project. Btw, I heard the tablet is poorly criticized by analysts for its poor performance, not to mention the failure of meeting the deadline for delivery. Datawind as far as I can tell is gone, the government now looking for new partner.

Because for all that it does do and all that it I doesn’t do, it’s a throw away device. I wouldn’t buy it be because it doesn’t meet my expectations, needs and desires in a tablet device.

I’d rather buy a tablet that costs 12x as much and will last me for years rather than buy 12 of those per year.

Thats the difference between low-end and high-end products. Apple products last longer and are value stable. I guess this product can’t be updated to a newer Android version :-/ its like a disposal camera… For school purpuse on short term its maybe okay but is it sustainable and long-lasting?

Our kids’ optimus phones have 600mhz processors and they do just fine… In fact, better than 800mhz samsung entry level phones.

Its actually not bad by any standard except for the battery life. It wouldnt be a problem if coupled with a solar power charging capability.

Here’s why it’s cheap. They use cheap labor in India and they are using really cheap parts. Seriously a 700 mHz processor? I didn’t know things were still even measured in that unit. And of course, 3 hour battery life. If you have crappy enough parts you can really lower the price. The problem is that $40 is still a lot of money for many Indians. But if the government is buying it, it can have limited school applications I suppose.

Well.. The intention and the intended markets for the products are completely different. iPad is a high-end consumer product and the Akaash tablet is a low-end educational tablet for students in India to access the web. If the Akaash tablet is able to have a web browser with decent speed and battery, it serves the purpose.

Go get ‘em Chris. Probably the same answer as why Detroit “couldn’t manufactor efficent cars here in the US but were making them in Europe ten years earlier. I’d like the $40 version. Hell I’d even buy one for my Mom!
