I just got the iPad2 a month ago. I must say it has improved since the first version. However for the type of projects I design, a tablet is used as a presentation tool to show different aspects of systems and the airplane itself with the ability to drill down to the details. There are several software that are involved from VR to analytical tools. Most of these have been written in C or Java and need quite a bit of processing power to run. So we are really looking at having a Quad Core tablet with 8gb RAM and an i7 chip. Is that asking for too much? An iPad 2 really doesn’t serve that purpose. From a practical viewpoint, the cost of converting all the apps I need to an iOS format is significant. For now we are using the iPad2 as a marketing tool with a bit of magic using Monocle for augmented reality. Customers usually come in to the factory on tours, they walk around the labs, the assembly line, the test areas and when they hold their iPad 2′s in front of a certain part, its co-ordinates are programmed to trigger an event which gives the user more information, a voice over walkthrough or a video. He can share what he sees using Facetime. We are currently evaluating Dell’s Inspiron Duo & the HP Slate 500 in addition to the iPad.

I think you have that backwards, it’s Apple that is giving these things away right and left.

It has gotten so bad I am starting to wonder if Apple is actually selling any of these or just giving them away.

Damn near every tv show every hour has some free ipad giveaway, every tech blog, everywhere you go everyone is giving an ipad away….

BTW, I hear Toys R Us will be selling them real soon…. must really be some future magical device if toys r us has them… I mean they always carry the cutting edge computer technology right?

While going through the column “Forget apps, Apple’s core iPad 2 experience needs to grow up” I couldn’t help being impressed by the information that it provides me. I studied the column minutely and learnt many information about Apple’s core ipad.
I also got some information regarding the same matter in the site”http://www.i4u.com/46070/apple-back-school-2011-promotion-starts-likely-may”. I learnt from the site that Apple will very likely launch the Apple Back To School 2011 promotion next month.This sale is very popular with students and members of the educational system. With the iPad making inroads into class room around the nations and even into Kindergartens, an iPad 2 Back To School deal would be a nice move for Apple.A sizable discount would enable more students to benefit from an iPad.

Having multiple user or at least a guest account on a single Ipad would be very useful in my situation.

I have an IPAD and a Laptop.

if I go on vacation or visit a friend:

I can bring My MS laptop which is bulky compare to the Ipad.

but, with the Laptop, I have all accounts available Me/Wife/Kids,
which allows me to:
1) do parental control (splits movies per account etc.)
2) let the kid have their own favorites in browser
3) wife own environment.
4) e-mail per user.
5) etc..

Just my 2 cents…

I am amazed to see the Author get a beating because of is opinion.
The problem might be the same with all tablets. it does not mean that this feature would not be useful for some people

you mean the reason you don’t have a tablet is because you can’t afford one? hey, Xoom has a great deal for you…. step right up….. they soon will be giving them away 2 for 1, like they do with Android handsets, or free with a contract… because well that is the only way people will take an Android device…

there is a reason why people actually pay money for an Apple device… where Androids have to be given away for free….

No, that’s the problem with iOS notifications, android’s notifications DON’T pop up and bother you, but appear on the notification bar and activate the indicator light. Android also offers the Action bar where all your notifications are listing in order with appropriate icons and link you to the appropriate app. Just making iOS’s notifications more android-like where they don’t just primitively pop-up would be great, leave the other advanced features once the basic system actually works.

This goes both ways, just because you don’t have very advanced needs, doesn’t mean other users don’t. iPad isn’t a toy, isn’t a portable gaming set, but sold as a complete computing platform. It should have features similar to other platforms around the same price. Claiming the iPad is easy to use is one thing, but attributing that to its lack of features or functionality is simply untrue. The fact that iOS can’t satisfy advanced users has nothing to due with it’s success in the tech-illiterate world, but is proof that it can be improved.

It’s a single-user device by design. If buying multiple iPads exceeds your budget, remember that the first-gen iPod was $399, and no one would argue that it was a multi-user device. Nor does anyone think of the iPhone or iPod Touch as multi-user devices.

If this is really an issue, each user can store his or her personal files in Dropbox/Simplenote/GDocs/Picasa/etc. or use MobileMe. Web based mail can be used in Safari.

I personally think the lack of sideloading is a much more serious limitation of the iPad, but between Dropbox, Goodreader and Simplenote, I can pretty much bypass iTunes for getting things in or out of the device without having to connect it to a computer. When the right Android tablet comes around (the Asus Transformer looks compelling), I’ll switch to something with proper USB, HDMI and microSD support. But even Android doesn’t support multiple user profiles.

Pretty much the same thing. Browse the Internet, play multimedia, video chat, send emails etc. Why are millions of people are buying the iPad? The extra needed space and specs andcthe reliability of course. 3.5” vs. 9.7″ I won’t be surprised that someone is using their iPod Touch as their “personal desktop”

Quite agree, everything is focused upon a single user. Our IPad gets shared around in a way that our phones do not. I just seems natural. Why do I want to see my wifes email when I have borrowed it-I want my own email! When I read my Flipboard I want it to use my twitter not my wifes. Do I want my own -not really. We have too much clutter.

I agree with the article but i think i know why Apple will never truly implement multiple user accounts on the iPad. Why only sell a family one iPad with multiple user accounts for all of them when you can sell them three, one for mum, dad and the eldest/only child. Spaces will be interesting to see when we get more info.

From what i can gather, UnderDoc is asserting that the article Chris Davies wrote was good, but it’s underlying points are poorly understood or misconstrued as, i can only guess, Apple hate or something along those lines. The phrase “Margaritas ante porcos” is Latin referring to giving something valuable to someone who is not respecting you or what you gave them which again circles round to their original assertion that Chris has done a good article but it has been received by many people who have misconstrued the point of the article and thus rejected/not respected it. I could be wrong but that was my interpretation of their comment.

There are lots of skeptics. Three executives of some very large firms made similar statements the other day … Microsoft, HP and Dell. Then some other companies are having their CEO’s stepping down because they aren’t making the money they want. Why are people standing in line and paying their dollar to get the ipad the way it is designed. They aren’t crying about what it can’t do they way you would like. If it doesn’t work for you, that is fine. Use something else. But to tear down one of the most successful product introductions in years has something going for it. I would suggest you try to understand before you starting changing. There is a sage old saying that states the same idea. Wake up my friend.

You do make a point about multiple accounts … but do you share your phone … probably not. So why do we need to share the ipad? You make a case for multitasking (not quick app switching) you want this to be more pc like. Then you want better notifications … like ads popping up in your face all the time. I think you have certain needs. They are nothing like the average user needs. I bought the ipad2 for my wife (72 lovely years old) doesn’t like pcs period. Too complicated. She is using the ipad. it is friendly, the email client is hers, not mine. I have a Mac mini for my stuff. I can see you have a lot of I wants, but you really need to look at this marvelous new device. It is not designed to replace your laptop. It is a reader of digital material. My wife, reads a lot, she like the internet and the ipad is very simple and easy. Notificatons … I would turn them off completely. Widgets, who needs them. She only focusses on one thing at a time anyway. She likes puzzles, slideshows, and is working on how to make up her own greeting cards. For her this is marvelous.

So your review is slanted on your work style … that is not the big appeal of the masses. I know a lot about computers, I build em, fix em and use them. The ipad is for my bride who could care less about playing crysis or the like. So you need to adjust your focus to what it is, what it can do. The competition is still in vaporwaresville…. trying to figure out why millions of people want ipad and are willing to stand in line for them. Who cares about customizing them. The geeks like that, but the average person who wants an ipad , could care less. Take off your pc blinders and try to figure out why Apple is being so successful. They are not perfect … no company is. But they are making money and people really want their products … more than ever… and the demand is growing, and growing. Check out the article by Jesus Diaz on Gizmodo about Photoshop and its impact in the next step to the new paradigm shift that is taking place. Step outside of your tiny sandbox … and figure out what is really happening.
