It’s been a while since I’ve heard much about the Folding@home project that the PS3 has become such a huge part of. If there’s one thing that no one can hold against the PS3, it’s the fact that it’s got power, and Sony is letting the people put it to good use. The project has hit one of their biggest milestones ever.

The milestone isn’t just big for the project, it’s huge for the entire distributed computing network industry. The Folding@home project has officially been the first such distributed computing network to achieve a petaflop. (no, that has nothing to do with old men and small children, get your mind out of the gutter people!).

While we’re not sure of the exact power the PS3 contributed to the effort, it looks like they are doing somewhere around ¾ of the work. There are currently 600,000 PS3 users contributing to the cause. How many of you that own a PS3 are signed up to help out?
