Fitbit and HealthKit? Not any time soon

As we've said time and again, Apple's HealthKit has a lot of promise. The ability to view data about yourself via a single app (Health) is a neat idea. It's been assumed that companies would jump at the chance to get on-board with HealthKit, and engage users on a whole new level. At least one major fitness technology brand isn't interested. Fitbit is currently swearing off HealthKit, but aren't staunchly against the platform. It seems they're just being pragmatic about Apple's new fitness darling.

When prompted by a user in their forums to add Fitbit to HealthKit (it rhymes, too, so they really should), a company spokesperson was dismissive of HealthKit as it stands:

We do not currently have plans to integrate with HealthKit. It is an interesting new platform and we will watch as it matures, looking for opportunities to improve the Fitbit experience. At the moment, we're working on other exciting projects that we think will be valuable to users. The question we want you to keep in mind when providing feedback is: What do you imagine a HealthKit integration would entail and what do you expect to get out of it? Your voices are being heard. We're actively reviewing your responses and providing feedback to our product development team.

Fitbit is clearly relying on their own ecosystem for now, but their commentary of HealthKit is telling. Watching HealthKit "as it matures" is likely the most telling line, here. If I were to assume a meaning behind that, I'd say Fitbit just plain doesn't see the value in sharing user info with HealthKit — yet.

The response wasn't closed, though. Fitbit isn't swearing HealthKit off entirely, but they're definitely not making it a priority.
