It’s time to dust off those guitar controllers and get the band back together because Activision has just announced the first round of tracks for the upcoming Guitar Hero III. Don’t worry, it will work on all three next-gen consoles and the PS2. This isn’t just the same old game with new tracks and a few new places to play, they’ve added some really cool features.

Guitar Hero

Probably the coolest thing is going to be the online play where you can challenge players to a rock-off anywhere in the world. They are also adding in a multiplayer battle mode and boss battles. I have no idea what that means exactly, but it sounds awesome.

There are going to be new guitars for the third installment of the game including Gibson Les Paul and Kramer guitars. There will also be new venues to rock as well. But the big news is the song list. What really rocks is that you’ll notice that seven of the eleven tracks announced are master tracks, not crappy covers. Here’s what you’ve been waiting for, the list.

Master tracks:

  • Paint It Black (by The Rolling Stones)
  • Cherub Rock (by Smashing Pumpkins)
  • Sabotage (by Beastie Boys)
  • The Metal (by Tenacious D)
  • My Name is Jonas (by Weezer)
  • Knights of Cydonia (by Muse)
  • Cult of Personality (by Living Colour)

Covers:

  • Rock And Roll All Nite (as made famous by Kiss)
  • School’s Out (as made famous by Alice Cooper)
  • Slow Ride (as made famous by Fog Hat)
  • Barracuda (as made famous by Heart)

You might check out Frets on Fire, it’s an open-source project similar to Guitar Hero on your PC. If you have an Xbox 360 controller you can use it with Frets on Fire.
