I would like to think that innovation far surpasses technical specs and hardware. I think innovation is about changing people's perspectives on how they use their device, and more so, how their devices actually work for them. That is what Google, Microsoft and Apple are trying to aim at: to be able to align consumers to their perspective of what makes a truly great mobile device/platform.

Innovation is going to the bottom. It is touching mid-range and high-end devices as well. Platforms continue to evolve, as well as the technology that delivers them. I don't see any reason why the trickling down of technology to the low-end is not a form of innovation. If it is as you say, then I wouldn't have a low cost phone with me that I bought for 50$, and I would still be using a can with a string attached at the other end.

Nokia is potentially missing out on a huge market in the U.S. with their Symbian phones if they keep ignoring the prepaid market. Right now for the most part, people have only two choices in the U.S.... if you want a feature-rich smart phone, you pretty much need to go to a carrier and go under contract (or pay $$$ for an unlocked phone), or, go to a prepaid phone service but suffer outdated "dumb" handsets, or Android devices that are also outdated and feature-outdated.

There are a good number of people here who want a smartER phone, without going the full plunge into Android or Apple. Symbian is a good middle ground, offering all of the basics plus some, without the complex over-the-topness the full smart phones have. Nokia is developing and already has some interesting Symbian handsets that prepaid users would eat up like cake, if they could only be offered to them. They're certainly not going to pick a Symbian over an Android or iPhone if they are all offered at the same price at a major carrier, however.

I would strongly suggest that Nokia approach companies like Tracfone, Straight Talk (same owner), Consumer Cellular, and others, and introduce their customers to the Symbian handsets. My guess is, it would go over well.

1. Try to read the article first. It's not about innovation, it's about going to the bottom, pricewise, featurewise, build quality wise etc.
2. Nokia and innovation? Give me a break ... the only "innovation" is trying to trick people to pay flagship price for a middle-of-the-pack specs: single core (no 1080p video recording for you!), low resolution/low pixel density display, plastic body. Yes, no matter what name you come with, polycarbonate, polywhatever, it's still a piece of plastic. You pay like metal price for it. Let's not forget about restrictions: non-replaceable battery, no card slot, locked bootloader, close-to-useless OS. Is this what you call "always better for consumers" ?

I disagree. If a company is pioneering innovation in an industry, it will get noticed. Just as Apple made waves in the early stages of the smartphone race with a fresh design language courtesy of Jobs. Now it is Nokia's turn and pretty soon every other company out there who wishes to outdo themselves. The end result is always better for consumers :)
