I agree about Internet being a public utility. Problems is even electric and gas companies are out of control, in 15years owing my home utility cost such as gas and electric have increase about 300% all the while gas company had profits of around 14billion dollars! Its is not the government giving guidelines on how they should operate but them controlling our government.

But yes a nation wide gigabit fiber network would lead to such incredible things we could use it for.

Finally! I can no longer live with 300kb download speed for at&t’s fastest internet in Louisiana. Which they claim is 6megs.

Id rather see that money going to get us that live out in the country a reliable broadband connection. 1.5mb dsl on a good night is no longer cutting it.

I’d like gigabit internet, too, but I don’t see much incentive in this plan. There’s so little competition in the ISP space, why should companies care?

Internet connectivity should really be treated as a public utility, and then allow customers to contract with individual ISPs for their connection, bandwidth, billing, and service. That would reduce the barrier to entry of competitors, giving consumers options to choose between.
