They can throw all the theoritical maximum speed limits and claim their faux G is faster, but it doesn’t mean squat in real life when you you jumping cell towers or inside a building.

Interestingly, ATT made a stink about how HSPA+  is not 4G and T-Mo is falsely advertising few years back. Guess ATT isn’t against false advertising themselves.

Here’s the problem where I think Apple is contradicting itself.  It wants “4G” to mean something different in Australia than it means in the States.

Either it’s meaningless and it has no place on the wrapper of your product at all, or it means something and that something should be consistent.

T-Mobile claims that their HSPA+ 42 data network not only offers similar speeds but can compete with “4G LTE” technology.

Apple is saying that if your 3G network offer speeds that LTE or WiMax can, why not call your 3G network “4G”?

Stop being a moron.. you cant get “True 4G Speeds” over a 3G network… And WTF are you talking about “True 4G Speeds” as if there are “Fake 4G Speeds” There are such terms as “Theoretical speed” “Peak Speed” and “Network throughput”; But no “true” or “false” speeds.. keep that in mind at all times k thx..

Carriers such as AT&T; T-mobile; Verizon pressured and lobbied the ITU(International Telecommunication Union) to “redefine” 4G (fourth generation) networks to a much much lower standard, all so they could market devices to misinformed idiot consumers.. not just Apples iphone and ipad benefited; Sprint could now label its WiMAX equiped HTC EVO “4G” even tho Sprint’s WiMAX barely gets the same speeds and struggles to compete with GSM based 3G networks. Its Hype, Snake oil, and Marketing that idiots get sold on and buy new devices over.  In the case of the Carriers down under, they did not accept the new definition pushed by the American carriers marketing departments, and stuck with the original definition.

So what was “4G” defined as originally?

“In March 2008, the International Telecommunications Union-Radio communications sector (ITU-R) specified a set of requirements for 4G standards, named the International Mobile Telecommunications Advanced (IMT-Advanced) specification, setting peak speed requirements for 4G service at 100 megabits per second (Mbit/s) for high mobility communication (such as from trains and cars) and 1 gigabit per second (Gbit/s) for low mobility communication (such as pedestrians and stationary users).”   Wikipedia

4G’s Original definition of 100Mbits/s while moving, and 1Gigabit/s Standing is a LONG way off from any of today’s global wireless networks. Carriers with all the tantrums they throw wont be pushing the original definition of “4g” throughput anytime in the near future. 

The Theoretical speed of tmobile and att’s HSPA+ GSM networks is 42Mbits/s PEAK. IE you will never EVER see that speed, unless you are squatting on a cell-tower and no one else is using it.

At best HSPA+ networks are 3.5G by the original ITU definitions; Current LTE Networks also fall under this not yet 4G category. “LTE-Advanced” is the 4G standard which is closest to meeting the original definition.. No mainstream devices are currently utilizing LTE-Advanced.

So no phone out today is “4G”; Many phones are marketed to complacent consumers who are to ignorant to know better, but they are not 4G, and not getting anywhere near 4G speed over any of the networks especially in the USA.

In fewer words… before you start introducing the pot to the kettle; try actually knowing what your trolling about fanboy.

I hate to agree with Apple, but what customers care about is the speed, not the technology that gets them the speed.

T Mobile has been touting its “non-4G” 4G network for years now just because it managed to get 3rd generation networks to perform slightly better than typical 3rd gen or “3G” networks…

Sprint did the same thing…. and when the HTC Evo and TMo androids we being called “4G” the geeky 1% of the population used this to go “Apple-bashing” for Apple faliling to join the pseudo 4G network marketing bandwagon…

now that the Apple iPhone and ipad can take advantage of true 4G speeds thru 3G (aka 3rd generation” networks, while much more suitably considered 4G, the Apple-haters in tha house are screaming foul… BUT … —BUT when android was proclaiming 4G while still in single digit mbps downloads the geeks COULD NOT brag harder and bigger while pointing fingers at Apple…

In fewer words… hello pot, meet kettle!

Apple should just get those Aussies to call their networks Apple network or iNetworks…

4G == voice and data on one stack
3G == two separate stacks.

No mater how much marketing they throw on it, “enhanced 3G” is not 4G.

If DCHSDPA and HSDPA+ performances are comparable to LTE (which is also not a true 4G – more like 3.9G), why are carriers spending billions on LTE infrastructure over their 3G+?
