Is this such a huge deal to have this big debate over? Wow. They don’t have it now (I was looking for that phonebook list because I got an iphone 4s and had to get numbers of some people I talk to all the time) and I can’t find it on fb anyway. @yahoo-6SONAIV5JK23TN4PWQS7JFUA7M:disqus Have you received a lot of telemarketers calling your phone? If you have it’s from something else. I have been a part of Facebook since like ’07 I think and whenever I get a telemarketer I ask how they got my number and they usually know. I also don’t get very many of those calls because I don’t sign up for a lot of things. A lot of you are all upset they store your phone number. How many websites are you subscribed to? Because when signing up for virtually anything nowadays you give your first and last name, email and a phone number you could be reached at. Also if you sat and read the entire terms & Conditions of the fb app and fb itself i’m sure you would see that your just uneducated in the matter and just wanted to rant about something.

So, again, BeanieBabe has to authorize nothing, NOTHING. Her husband in this case can make her number listed on Facebook. Public or private doesn’t matter, that info is shared with facebook WITHOUT her authorization or consent!

ClareCarney – you ask “how would facebook know their numbers unless they had ripped them from my phone” – you answered this yourself – “while I have recently downloaded a FB app to my phone” – you also enabled FB sync with that app. “They” ripped them with your permission. You may not have realized it (we tend to just click “OK” as we install stuff) but you did.

Both you and BeanieBabe are mistaken here. The article is accurate. Beanie – you said your kids don’t have smartphones yet their cell numbers show up on your husbands FB contacts. First, this is because your HUSBAND has the smartphone, FB account, and FB smartphone app that is sync’d to FB – not your kids. Second, your kids numbers are only in your husband’s FB page because HE AUTHORIZED IT when he chose to sync his smartphone contacts to FB via the smartphone FB app. Check YOUR FB contacts page. If you don’t have a smartphone, then you will NOT see your kids’ cell numbers there.

And tvonthebrain – what are you talking about? Unless the smartphone user (in this case, Beanie’s husband) said “yes I want to sync my contacts to FB” then those contacts will NOT show up on the users’ FB contacts page.

Are you folks happy having a bag over your head? This isn’t accurate? Wait until Anonymous hacks Facebook and all of your contact phone numbers are posted to the waking world. Then you’ll be using that bag as your personal toilet when you start to mess yourself.

Well I do NOT have a smartphone, and MY cell number shows up on my husband’s contact page. I did NOT authorize my number to be published anywhere. This is just a way for FB to collect phone numbers to sell to marketers.

Absolutely correct. This app sucks in everything, phone numbers, email addresses, names into your ‘contacts’. Whether those are made public or not nobody knows, but they ARE stored.

What’s funny? The reverse is not true! Facebook does NOT sync all information from your FB contacts to your phone.. They don’t sync emails, they don’t sync phones, etc! Talk about a huge scam.

Yep, agreed, this can’t be right. Facebook pulled in every Tom, Dick and Harry I have ever known – even my old work numbers and that fake contact I have saved under ‘AAA’ to stop me from accidentally calling the first number in my phone book (sorry Aaron!). Many of these contacts don’t have a Facebook page so how would Facebook know their numbers unless they had ripped them from my phone.

I think this is pretty sneaky…while I have recently downloaded a Facebook app to my phone I have never entered my number to sync my mobile to my Facbook profile so wouldn’t expect Facebook to automatically save all my numbers. It’s also not that easy to remove. If it were, Facebook wouldn’t have to explain the removal process in 10 lines of text!!

When I opened this contact list in Facebook there were email addresses listed in there for people I work with, people I had emailed one time, people I had bought something from Craigslist from – all kinds of stuff. Facebook took everything out of my phone and put in in my Facebook account including all these people that I don’t know and that aren’t my Facebook friends.

This article is not accurate. This list that people are concerned about is not just a list of Facebook contacts, what happens is that the Facebook mobile app copies ALL your contacts, email, phone, work, whatever, and puts them in a Facebook contact book online.
