Couldn't their old ad system pay for the service they provide? Also, these new ads will be in the way of people's news feed instead of off to the side. That said, even if they could pay for FB the old way, why should they when they can be making more money and there is no major threat to them?

Nothing is free. NOTHING. Businesses exist to make money. Good businesses provide something that people want. If consumers like it, then consumers will want it. Once they want it, it's just a matter of time before they are ready to spend money (one way or another) on it. I was never under the impression that Facebook was a nonprofit. Facebook ads generate income. I'm really mystified why this is causing such an uproar. Mechanics are paid to fix cars. Doctors are paid to heal people. Actors are paid to perform. It really doesn't seem unreasonable that Facebook is finding ways to generate income to pay for the services the provide.
