Amazon is now in NO WAY a company to be scared of. I’ve had an account for years and used to buy mostly everything exclusively from them. Now that their product pricing is no where near the lowest anymore I’ve just about stopped ordering anything from them.

On top of that someone made another account at Amazon in my name w/the same credit card # as mine last month. So $460.00 was spent in my name at Amazon I got nothing. Well, B of A refunded my purchase but I am now so leery of Amazon.

Now that I price compare Amazon , they never seem to compete w/the lowest price for any item. They used to but not anymore!

If I had any sense I’d dump or sell Amazon shares in a heartbeat!

Yeh. Amazon is run by real people. I have never ever come into contact with a live person at google. I am sure they are there but my dealings with google have been getting messages from bots and no access to staff. I wonder if they have the staff? Amazon seem to be a real company to the consumer and not a robot

Amazon is both great, and they also will cause the downfall of untold small local businesses and as we’re seeing even large companies can be dramatically affected. Small local bookstores? They’re already largely gone. Electronics? Circuit City gone and Best Buy taking hits bigtime. I work for a local high-end specialty retailer of A/V and we get it too. To the point where we pretty much don’t make a dime on video products and only survive due to decent – not great – margin on audio products. Amazon is a classic case of getting by on sheer mass volume of sales and ever increasing marketshare, and I’m sure that they charge a pretty penny for ad space or placement within their offerings during searches, etc. The thing is, it works. They are the first company to really understand how the new world of sales was going towards and have snatched up an amazing number of industries that they now practically control. Amazon is great when you need something because it’s just so dang easy to find and get. But when local businesses that employ our neighbors and friends and brothers and sisters shut down all over the country? Not so good.

Even Staples stopped selling Kindle. With the exception of having your package shipped or your computer worked on, there is nothing Staples sells that can’t be bought on Amazon, much cheeper in fact.

I’ve also read first hand stories of app developers getting screwed royally by Amazon. I’m sorry to hear that things are not going well for you and other sellers. 90 days doesn’t seem very practical to me unless you have a huge amount of start-up assets. I know Newegg now has a 3rd party seller system set up. I don’t know that exact breadth of goods that can be sold there. Maybe they have better terms for sellers? That is my second favorite online shopping site. Best of luck!

its a shame their Seller support isnt the same! I have quite a substantial amount in my sellers account that I can’t touch for 90 days. A quick search online and it seems it seems to be normal! Funny thing is they say to keep fulfilling orders! SO I am meant to keep selling and not see my money for 3 months! Amazon is great for Buyers! But Sellers are being screwed!!!!

I for one, am not scared of Amazon. As a consumer, they’ve always treated me well, and they’ve earned my business; I make a good deal of my purchases from them. But I still go to Gamestop for my games, or download the games from the Playstation Network, I still shop at Target regularly, I still go to Sports Authority for my sporting goods, etc.

I think people are scared of Amazon because of articles like this, and this weird cultural phenomenon about labeling Amazon as this malevolent entity that wants to eat our children.

Well, you can say the same thing about Walmart. Amazon is swallowing the world right now. No one else wants low margins or has their infrastructure to support them.

This is what came up when I thought about Windows 8: they’re bad at retail. Rather than Amazon competing with everyone, everyone has to compete with Amazon in this new app/media world. Eventually even the Hollywood/TV people will have to bow down, because they’ll run out of other retailers. You can already see Target and Walmart’s media selection dwindle in the Itunes world. Even the cable companies won’t be able to match AMZ for size.

I haven’t had these issues, but I’ve been discouraged by the amount of stuff that isn’t actually sold by Amazon, but by shifty no-name retailers on their site. I mostly noticed this because they won’t take amz points from teh cc and they won’t give me free shipping. I’m curious how this will turn out, because Amazon is in so many businesses now. Including Zappos, an entirely separate retailer that isn’t even listed on their pages.

Everyone should be scared of Amazon because they have managed to succeed and continue to gain market share while operating at a loss or on razor thin margins for the past fourteen years. The law of probabilities will catch up with them eventually though, and Jeff Bezos is one major miscalculation away from disaster. The problem I have with editorials like these is that they ignore the financial fundamentals. A company like Apple can afford a mistake. A company like Amazon cannot.

A lot of conjecture here sir. I’ve been a loyal Amazon customer for 12 years and I think their prices suck now. Their digital content is massively over priced and they can’t seem to get a shipment out on time to save their lives. I’m going to say they are dangerously close to plateauing as a business due to having too many eggs in one basket. Or maybe I’m just angsty what the hell do I know.
