eMusic announced today that they will be offering up songs from Sony Music, with one important stipulation attached. The songs have to be more than two years old in order to be added to the online music store.

So, what does this mean for subscribers? You’ll find that your monthly fees increase a bit and that the number of downloads you can make a month is reduced. By Q3, several classic songs will be added to the store from the likes of Johnny Cash and Billy Joel.

Currently, the basic plan is $12/month which allots you 24 downloads. What makes this interesting is that most music labels are against this format because the songs are in MP3 format and not protected in anyway. However, we’ll just have to wait and see how this plays out and whether or not it’s a successful plan.
