If you often commit confidential information to your CDs, even while on the go, then you might need a portable CD destroyer. The SCR-CD001 from Elecom is a small compact USB-powered device the size of a mouse, that will scratch up your CDs in seconds making them totally unreadable. So, although they don’t completely destroy or shred to bits your CDs, they do create enough damage while leaving you plenty of intact CDs to make yourself a nice retro CD garland or curtain. So far, it is only available in Japan and costs 3,150 Yen ($26).

Hm. Unless this actually disturbs the media substrate, it’s just for show. There are a wide variety of devices out there designed to remove scratches from CDs. They’re expensive, but they work.
You’re better off buying a CD shredder or actually melting the CDs you want to destroy. And there’s always the brute force method: snapping them in half.

The image shows a DVD which is a bad oversight, almost fraudulent.
NeutralThe recording layer on a DVD is sandwiched between surface layers of polymer so any amount of destruction to the surfaces of the disk will not disturb the data embedded in the DVD. Small surface scratches on any optical media disk can be polished off. Best destruction method is to shred them in a dedicated disk shredder.
