Running OS X on generic PC hardware is nothing new, and some companies have even risked Apple’s ire and launched commercial products using the popular software, but EFiX’s upcoming USB dongle is slightly different. It claims to allow you to install OS X Leopard, from a retail DVD, on a computer of your choosing. The magic is that the EFiX dongle handles all the necessary patching and other tweaks, leaving you to enjoy Apple’s wares.

OS X running on ASUS via EFiX

Netkas, who works on the OSX86 team, has been testing the EFiX product and come away impressed. He put together the video above as proof of functionality.

EFiX plan to release the dongle on June 23rd, though pricing is not yet clear. They claim to have been testing it for the past six months, with development time taking even longer (and being subject to sabotage). How much would you pay for something like this? Let me know in the comments.

osx is not that great if your thinking it is more secure than windows. i would think it would be a ripoff to charge more than 20 dollars people. anyone who tried mac in the past will tell you finding games , programs or any thing actualy useful other than what already comes on OSX is difficult. i suggest tring ubuntu 8 (gusty gibbon) if your curious about mac since it has alot of similar features . plus its free !! and will work on any modren x86 system . i have a mac that i dont use other than for music production and some video editing . my main thing is windows so i dont throw something when i want a new game or application . on my play computer i experiment with different linux distros some of which can actually run some windows apps.

    MOJO:
Your statement is bulls#@*! Fact is Mac is more secure than windows. It is far more stable, it does run windows apps/games if you so require. It has more games than people realise. And I would be greatly surprised if you couldn’t find a similar or identically functioning application for the mac.

Now in regards to the dongle. Not a chance it will survive. It was designed to break/change another software companies code. It will be gone before it comes out or seconds after it does get released.

“Mac OSX osx is not that great”
Um, then tell me, why have I not gotten a single virus, worm or trojan horse since Jan 23, 1984?
What “software” can’t you find for OSX?
    Microsft Office? Got it
    Adobe Software? Got it all
ProTools? Got it, as well as any other Music software
    Games? Buy an XBox
Any Video production software? Got it.

You do music production on your Mac? Funny, so does the rest of the world. Call around NY, LA, TO, Nashville, hell anywhere, ask them if someone other than the secretary is using a windoze machine?
Everything you read - Newspapers, magazines, books, comics - all done on Macs
Everthing you watch - TV Shows, Network news, Blockbuster movies, music videos - all done on a Mac

Windows - appearing at a local office building near you(in the typing pool).

“Um, then tell me, why have I not gotten a single virus, worm or trojan horse since Jan 23, 1984?”

Been using PCs since 1984 myself and I have never gotten a virus, or trojan horse either. Have people tried to send me that stuff, yes, every day. But I make sure that I’m protected.

As far as crashes, I have a buddy who is a software developer and his Mac is always getting to the point where he has to reboot it. Not much different than my PC.

However, I do agree with you that Mojo’s statement about software is not 100% accurate. Why not 100%, because I’m sure that if you look hard enough you will find something for the PC that is not on the Mac and the reverse is also true.

But as GD said, you can always find something similar. And that goes both ways.

Will the dongle survive/work? I hope so. I mean psytar is still alive. And coming out with more products.

Better use a free and open source “swap CD” that does the same and better :-)
